Retiro takes its name from the park, but the district runs well past it: from the Paseo del Prado east to the M-30, and from Calle de Alcalá and O'Donnell south to the Atocha tracks.1 Its six barrios are Jerónimos, Ibiza, Niño Jesús, Estrella, Pacífico and Adelfas, served by metro lines 1, 2, 6 and 9.1

Coffee splits in two. On the west side, cafés work the museum and park crowd from the blocks behind the Prado. East of the park they serve the people who live there, on Calle de Doce de Octubre, Calle de Máiquez and around Pacífico. Retiro also has more cafés open late than any other Madrid district, ahead of Tetuán.

Local tip: Reserve a Doble Uve Obrador roscón well before 6 January: daily numbers are capped, and each cake must be collected at Antonio Arias 5 or sent within its 10 km delivery range.6

Behind the Prado in Los Jerónimos

Café Murillo sits beside the museum's Puerta de Murillo, in a space that has held a café since 1927.2 Eliza Arcaya founded the current business to rescue a room that had lost its charm, and Guillermo Teixeira, its first employee, is now a partner. The menu mixes patatas bravas with Venezuelan tequeños, and the terrace looks toward the Prado.2 It runs from 12:00, so treat it as a lunch or evening stop.

Plenti, on Calle Moreto, is the morning option. As of November 2026, its menu lists espresso at €1.50, a flat white at €2.40 and toast from €2, with sweets baked daily.3 It opens at 09:00 on weekdays and 10:00 at weekends.

Argentine sweets on Máiquez and Menéndez Pelayo

Suru Café & Alfajores Artesanales, at Calle de Máiquez 50, belongs to Karen, from Argentina, and Jesús, from Spain. The name comes from a child at a family meal trying to say dulce de leche and producing suruleche. Alfajores (sandwich cookies) are made by hand in small batches, and a box of four costs €11.95 as of November 2026.4

Pastelería América - dos, on Avenida de Menéndez Pelayo, leans the same way, selling Argentine empanadas, alfajores and yerba mate alongside its cakes.5 It opens at 08:00 every day.

Bread on Antonio Arias, Peruvian beans on Doce de Octubre

Doble Uve Obrador has been a bakery and specialty café at Calle de Antonio Arias 5 since 2022. It advertises the best roscón (Epiphany ring cake) in the Comunidad de Madrid for 2026 and the best chocolate panettone for 2024, and each day has a limited quota of roscones in season.6 Weekend hours end at 15:00, so go early.

Nearby, the owners of El Oso y el Madroño opened Oso Café in 2021, specializing in Peruvian coffee.7 The older bar handles the long hours, from 07:00 to 23:30, while Oso Café closes between 14:00 and 16:30. Nuevo Specialty Coffee, on Calle de Cavanilles, covers Pacífico daily from 08:30 to 20:00 and has Wi-Fi.

Pacífico's brunch and board games

On Calle de Sánchez Barcáiztegui, the menu runs through breakfasts, brunch, gourmet sandwiches and meats cooked at low temperature.8 Vito Acanfora, a cook with two decades in Italy, Argentina, Spain, the United States and Britain, drew on all of them when he opened Café P.A.T.8 It opens Wednesday to Sunday and adds a dinner sitting until 23:00 from Wednesday to Saturday. Six board game café, on Avenida de la Ciudad de Barcelona, is the other reason to stay in the barrio after dark.
