Taiwan now drinks more coffee than tea. By 2020 the island had more than 15,000 coffee shops, from chains and convenience stores to independents, and that year average coffee consumption passed tea for the first time; by 2024 the average person drank 177 cups a year, the third-highest rate in Asia.1 President Chain Store, the operator of Taiwan's 7-Eleven shops, puts the national total at 2.85 billion cups a year.6

Taipei's café history starts on Wuchang Street, where the Astoria (明星咖啡館) opened on 30 October 1949, run by Jian Jin-zhui (簡錦錐) with six Russian émigrés as the successor to a Shanghai café of the same name.2 Writers Pai Hsien-yung (白先勇) and Huang Chun-ming (黃春明) wrote at its tables for years; the café floor closed in 1989 and reopened in July 2004.2

The specialty era has its own champions. Berg Wu of Simple Kaffa, a basement café that opened in 2011, became Taiwan's first World Barista Champion in Dublin in June 2016, and Chad Wang won the World Brewers Cup in Budapest a year later.34 Imported beans make up the vast majority of what is sold, but Taiwan grows its own in Pingtung, Nantou, Taichung and Chiayi, and Alishan farms took 13 of the top 20 places at the island's first Cup of Excellence in 2023.15

How coffee works in Taipei

The everyday cup comes from a convenience store. 7-Eleven has sold coffee since 1985 and launched City Café in 2005; FamilyMart's counter is called Let's Café.1 As of 2026, a medium americano (美式, měishì) costs NT$35 at both chains and a large latte (拿鐵, nátiě) NT$55, and 7-Eleven takes NT$5 off when you bring your own reusable cup.7 Its City Prima specialty line costs about twice as much as the regular City Café drinks.6

On café menus, 手沖 (shǒuchōng) is hand-poured filter coffee, 單品 (dānpǐn) a single origin, 冰 (bīng) iced and 熱 (rè) hot. Cafés that let you stay as long as you like say so with 不限時 (bù xiànshí, no time limit). A 2025 TVBS round-up of such places in Taipei still found two-hour limits at weekends or busy branches, and one roaster that had dropped its limit and wired every seat with a power outlet.13

Expect a 低消 (dīxiāo, minimum charge) in places with a draw beyond the coffee: at cat cafés it is usually the price of one drink or snack, and some popular ones ask about NT$400.14 Tipping is generally not practiced in Taiwan; full-service restaurants add a 10% service charge instead.11 Finish your cup before the ticket gates, because eating and drinking are not allowed in MRT stations or on trains.12

Summer days average around 34 °C, and typhoons can arrive from May to October, most often in August and September; autumn, the driest season, is the easiest time for an outdoor table.12 For coffee after dark, 弗列斯 on Yanji Street never closes and Block & Cafe on Taiyuan Road pours until 03:00.

FAQ

Cafés in Taipei: common questions

How much does coffee cost in Taipei?

As of 2026, a medium americano at 7-Eleven or FamilyMart in Taipei costs NT$35 and a large latte NT$55, with extra-large cups up to NT$60 and NT$70. At Louisa Coffee an americano is NT$60 and a latte NT$80 since January 2026. A regular cappuccino at a café runs NT$45–160, about NT$109 on average. US$1 was about NT$32.4 in October 2026.

Which area of Taipei has the most cafés?

Minsheng Community & Songshan and Nanjing East Road & Xingtian Temple have the most cafés, followed by Zhongzheng & Main Station. Xinyi and the East District share the lead for specialty roasters, and Yongkang Street & Shida has the most cafés serving until 22:00 or later.

What do 不限時 and 低消 mean at Taipei cafés?

不限時 (bù xiànshí) means no time limit: you can stay as long as you like. 低消 (dīxiāo) is a minimum charge, at cat cafés usually the price of one drink or snack. A 2025 round-up of no-time-limit cafés in Taipei found that some still set two-hour limits at weekends or at busy branches.

Where does the coffee in Taipei cafés come from?

Mostly from abroad: imported beans make up the vast majority of coffee sold in Taiwan. The island also grows its own in Pingtung, Nantou, Taichung and Chiayi, and at Taiwan's pilot Cup of Excellence in 2023, 13 of the top 20 coffees came from Alishan.

Where can you get coffee late at night in Taipei?

弗列斯 on Yanji Street in the East District never closes, and Block & Cafe on Taiyuan Road serves until 03:00. If you take a cup to go, finish it before the MRT gates: drinking is not allowed in stations or on trains.

Do you tip at cafés in Taipei?

No. Tipping is generally not practiced in Taiwan, at cafés or anywhere else, so you pay the price on the menu. Full-service restaurants in Taipei add a 10% service charge to the bill instead of expecting a tip, and that charge takes the place of one.
