Minsheng Community (民生社區) in Songshan District was developed in the 1960s and 1970s along American town-planning lines, Taiwan's first model community of the kind.1 The planners followed Clarence Perry's neighborhood-unit theory and split it into seven units around the Minsheng roundabout, with 25 parks taking up about a tenth of the land and power lines buried from the start.1

South of it, Songshan is a financial center, with many banks along Dunhua North and Nanjing East Roads.2 Its cafés fall into two groups: neighborhood rooms in the numbered lanes off Minsheng East Road, and a row of coffee bars on Nanjing East Road Section 5, two of which open at 07:30 on weekdays.

Local tip: Before an evening at Raohe Street Night Market, stop at Daychill on Nanjing East Road Section 5, which serves until 23:00, or 좋은 날 (好日子咖啡) on Yanshou Street, open until 22:00.

How Minsheng Community was built

The city set up a committee to build the new Minsheng East Road community in October 1964 and assembled the land through urban land readjustment; ground was broken in June 1965.1 By 1970 the community had Taiwan's first sewage-treatment plant, some of its schools and planned roads, and 2,500 homes.1 The plant closed in July 2002, and the wastewater now goes to the Bali treatment plant.1

Songshan Airport, the district's other landmark, began in March 1936 as a military airbase and now flies to Tokyo Haneda, Seoul Gimpo and Shanghai Hongqiao.4
