Gongguan (公館) is the commercial district that straddles Zhongzheng and Da'an Districts, with Roosevelt Road as its main street, known for its night market.1 The name goes back to the Kangxi era of the Qing dynasty, when public houses handled trade between Han settlers and Indigenous traders.1
National Taiwan University takes up the east side: founded in 1928 as Taihoku Imperial University, it covers 114.72 hectares and had 34,483 students in 2024.2 For cafés with more character than the chains, the back streets near the university are the place to look.4 Here they run along Wenzhou Street, Xinsheng South Road and the lanes behind Roosevelt Road Section 3.
Local tip: Spend the afternoon at Treasure Hill and walk back to Lane 283 of Roosevelt Road Section 3, where 葉子咖啡 and lumiele serve until midnight.
