Taipei's East District (東區, Dongqu) is the shopping quarter of Da'an District, roughly the blocks between Fuxing and Guangfu South Roads and between Civic Boulevard and Ren'ai Road.1 It began as the Dinghao (頂好) shopping area, and Far Eastern SOGO anchors it on Zhongxiao East Road Section 4.1 Together with Xinyi, it is the most modern and cosmopolitan part of the city.5

Until the mid-1970s the Section 4 corridor was still farmland; once Sections 3 and 4 of Zhongxiao East Road opened, the district grew fast and became Taipei's commercial core by the mid-1980s.1 The coffee is in the side streets. Only Xinyi has as many specialty roasters, and here they are spread through the lanes of Dunhua South, Fuxing South and Guangfu South Roads.

Local tip: Get off at Zhongxiao Fuxing for Dreamers and the Fuxing South Road lanes, and at Zhongxiao Dunhua for Ratio, Toasteria and the lanes of Dunhua South Road.
