Chalong runs from Chalong Bay on the south-east coast inland to Chalong Circle, the roundabout from which the Big Buddha is signposted.2 The bay is Phuket's most popular yacht anchorage and the main gateway to the nearby islands, and most of the island's dive shops are close to it.4

Away from the water, many long-stay visitors live here: in 2023 Phuket's immigration chief named Chalong and Rawai as the districts where Russians extending their stay had taken up temporary residence.6 Chalong's cafés line Chaofa West Road (ถนนเจ้าฟ้าตะวันตก), several with Wi-Fi, desks and a bakery counter.

Local tip: If you're heading up to the Big Buddha, have breakfast on Chaofa West Road first: จงชงดี opens at 06:00, three hours before the statue's 09:00 opening.2

Wat Chalong

Wat Chalong's official name is Wat Chaiyathararam (วัดไชยธาราราม). It is dedicated to two revered monks, Luang Pho Chaem and Luang Pho Chuang, who led Chalong's residents against a Chinese rebellion in 1876 and treated the injured with herbal medicine.1 The 1876 uprising involved Chinese laborers from the tin mines.7 Today a large market spills into the temple grounds.1

The road to the Big Buddha

The road up to the Big Buddha leaves Chaofa West Road; it is paved, and the top is about 15 minutes from the turn-off.2 The statue cost 30 million baht, mostly from donations.3 The site closed on 23 August 2024 after a landslide killed 13 people, reopened on 3 March 2026 for Makha Bucha Day, and is open 09:00–18:00, with last entry at 17:30.2

Cover shoulders and knees; sarongs are free at the entrance.2 Cafés line the road up, among them Nak-Kerd Seaview Cafe, about five minutes' drive below the statue. From the top it's about 15 minutes by car back to Chalong Circle, 25 to Rawai and 30 to Phuket Town.2
