Mueang Phuket has a dry season from December through March and a wet season across the other eight months.1 In the 1981–2010 normals, February averages 23.9 mm of rain on about three days, while September and October each bring rain on about 22 days, with September the wettest at 361.2 mm.1

Outdoor tables are spread more evenly across the island than other café types. Phuket Town, Phuket Old Town, Patong and Kata–Karon each have a few, and Ko Kaeo, Kathu, Chalong, Kamala and Rawai have one or two each.

Local tip: December to March is the dry season for outdoor coffee; in September and October, pick a café with an indoor room as well, such as Grifterz Lounge on Kata Road.1

Heat and rain at an outdoor table

Average daytime highs in the town normals range from 31.5 °C in September and October to 34.0 °C in March, and average lows stay between 24.4 °C and 25.8 °C all year.1 March and April are the hottest months to sit outside, and April already brings about 12 rainy days.1

Several cafés with outdoor seating also have an air-conditioned room to retreat to: A&B Café Kamala on Soi Thaweewongsub, Grifterz Lounge on Kata Road and Couple Café in Kata–Karon, which is also smoke-free.

Old Town's shaded sidewalks

Phuket's shophouses are joined wall to wall, often with a shared gallery that shades the sidewalk in front; the form reached Phuket from Malaysia in the 19th century.2 The front room usually held a shop or restaurant, with living quarters behind and upstairs.2

On Dibuk Road, Cafe Del Sol and The Shelter Cofee at No. 97 have outdoor tables, and Enjoy time cafe in Old Town stays open until 22:00. In Phuket Town, BlackDuck Homecoffee in Soi Phanthep 1 off Mae Luan Road opens daily 09:00–21:00, and Eat me bakery and cafe at 122 Mae Luan Road never closes.

Hock Hoe Lee's café in Rawai

Hockhoelee cafe belongs to a coffee business that began in 1958, when Tan Cheng Long, who had arrived from China in the early 1950s, rented a wooden shophouse on Jui Tui shrine land on Ranong Road in Old Town. He roasted coffee there and supplied street vendors and restaurants across the island.3

His granddaughter Jutamas and her husband Ruengrit later built the café on family land on the road to Rawai, in the corner unit of a row of shophouses, and it sells the family's roasted beans.3 In 2020 a kilo of their regular Thai coffee cost ฿300 and Doi Chang Arabica from northern Thailand ฿1,250.3

The café has outdoor tables, Wi-Fi and vegan dishes, takes cards, and opens Monday to Saturday 08:00–17:30 and Sunday until 17:00.

Ko Kaeo, Kathu and the west coast

On the east side, Cuppa in Ko Kaeo opens Monday to Saturday 07:00–16:30, and The Cockle Cafe & Eatery on Soi Ko Kaeo 6 runs Tuesday to Sunday 11:00–20:00. In Kathu, Black Sheep Cafe & House opens Monday to Saturday 09:00–20:00, and Happy Browns is on Soi Kathu 2.

In Patong, Campus Coffee Roasters roasts its own beans from northern Thailand.4 Its branch at 186 Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Road has outdoor tables and opens 10:00–19:30. Chanjaow Bakery opens at 07:00 except Mondays, and Urban Cafe Nanai is at 129/11 Nanai Road.
