Phuket Old Town covers 2.7 km² (210 rai) of Phuket Town, and its heritage buildings line ten streets, among them Dee Buk (Dibuk), Krabi, Phang Nga, Yaowarat and Soi Rommanee.1 The style is called Sino-Portuguese: one- or two-story shophouses with a narrow front and a deep plan, mixing Chinese and European features.1 Nobody knows when the first went up, but photographs from King Rama V's reign show the style already established.2

The money came from tin. In the 18th century Hokkien Chinese did much of the mining and helped build this part of town, and the Baba community, with its own language, dress and food, grew from early marriages between Hokkien miners and Siamese women.2 Many of the old buildings are now shops, hotels, restaurants and museums.2 Nowhere else on the island puts as many cafés within a few minutes' walk of each other.

Local tip: Campus Coffee Roasters on Krabi Road and Thai-Denmark Milk Land on Dibuk Road both open at 08:00; on a Sunday, finish there before Lard Yai's stalls take over Thalang Road at about 16:00.

Thalang, Dibuk and Krabi roads

Thalang Road is the center of the old Chinatown, on the north-west side of town, lined with boutiques and galleries selling handicrafts and regional antiques.3 On Dibuk Road, many shophouses keep their old wooden doors carved with Chinese fretwork.3 Soi Rommanee and Krabi Road have some of the most photographed fronts.4

Two museums tell the town's story. Thai Hua Museum on Krabi Road fills an early-20th-century Chinese school, and Museum Phuket (Peranakannitat), at the corner of Phuket and Phang Nga roads, uses the former Standard Chartered Bank.4 The Phuket Peranakan Festival, held since 2023, adds stage shows and a costumed street parade; the 2024 edition ran 21–23 June.4

Roasters and coffee bars on the old streets

Campus Coffee Roasters, at 6 Krabi Road, grew out of an owner who started roasting at university; the café opened to show single-origin beans from northern Thailand and now roasts African and South American coffee as well.5 Its menu ran 85–130฿ in 2026, with pour-overs at the top end.6 The Shelter Coffee, at 97 Dibuk Road, belongs to the 2016 Thailand AeroPress champion and serves AeroPress brews and a 72-hour cold brew beside a small garden.5

Yaowarat Road has its own run: ROÔF pudding & cafe at number 42, where drinks cost 90–150฿ in 2026, and GROM Cha at 46, open until 22:00.6 i 46 Oldtown is at 46 Krabi Road, Cafe Del Sol serves brunch on Dibuk Road from 08:00, and Thai-Denmark Milk Land, at 14 Dibuk Road, stays open until 21:00 from Friday to Sunday.

Roti, kanom jeen and an early breakfast

The oldest breakfasts are not in the cafés. Aroon, Abdul and Phuket Muslim, on or near Thalang Road, are roti shops still run by descendants of the Indian families who opened them about sixty years ago; the roti is made to order and dipped in chicken, mutton or beef curry.7 Aroon also makes the frothy pulled drink of tea and coffee called cha-chuk.7

At Po Lamai, where Satun and Dibuk roads meet, kanom jeen (fermented rice noodles under coconut curries) is best between 06:00 and 10:00, and regulars order an iced coffee as soon as they sit down.7 Among the cafés, Yo's Cafe opens at 06:30 and ComebackPhuket, at 95/18 Montri Road, at 07:00.

Sundays on Thalang Road

Every Sunday from about 16:00 to 22:00, Thalang Road becomes the Lard Yai walking street (ถนนคนเดินหลาดใหญ่; lard yai is the local form of talat yai, big market). Southern Thai street food, desserts, fruit, handicrafts and clothing run the length of the road and spill into the side sois; allow at least an hour.8

On other days the old streets are busiest in high season, when the small cafés fill up: arrive before 10:00 or after 14:00 for a seat.6 About a third of Old Town's cafés close by 18:00, so on a Sunday take your coffee before the stalls go up.
