Patong is Phuket's main beach resort, a town municipality on the west coast whose 2,850 m beach runs the full length of its west side.1 Western, mostly European, visitors took to it in the late 1980s, and it is now the center of the island's nightlife and shopping.1 It belongs to Kathu district, not to Mueang Phuket, and lies about 15 km from Phuket Town.32
Bangla Road, the nightlife strip and the island's best-known walking street, cuts across the middle of town between Beach Road and Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Road.21 The cafés sit back from it, on Rat-U-Thit, on Nanai Road and in the lanes between, and they keep later hours than most on the island: only about one in four closes by 18:00.
Local tip: Before the beach, Chanjaow Bakery opens at 07:00 and I-Kroon Cafe Espresso on Soi Nanairoumjai at 08:30; Campus's Patong branch doesn't open until 10:00.

Beach Road (Thawiwong) follows the sand, Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Road runs a few hundred meters inland, and Nanai Road, about 500 m further back, is quieter, residential and cheaper.2 A bypass runs behind the Jungceylon mall and the Banzaan fresh market; Jungceylon opens 11:00–22:00 from May to October and until 23:00 from November to April.2
Most of Patong is walkable. For longer hops there are motorbike taxis and metered taxis; the songthaew minivans have no meter, so agree the price before you get in.2
The airport is about 35 km north of Patong.2 The Phuket Smart Bus, which serves the west coast, has charged a flat 100฿ a trip since November 2022.4 From Phuket Town, buses run about every 30 minutes between 07:00 and 18:00 and take 30–45 minutes.2
On 26 December 2004 the Indian Ocean tsunami struck Patong, one of the worst-hit parts of Phuket, and the town has largely recovered.1 Kalim Beach, just north of Patong Bay, has a surf season from April to September.2
Campus Coffee Roasters, the Old Town roaster, has a Patong branch at 186 Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Road; in 2023 a cappuccino or flat white there cost 85฿, and its honey espresso on the rocks, with a lime and brown-sugar rim, 100฿.5 It opens 10:00–19:30.
I-Kroon Cafe Espresso, at 78/8 Soi Nanairoumjai, is open daily from 08:30 to 20:00. Urban Cafe Nanai has outdoor seats at 129/11 Nanai Road, Chanjaow Bakery opens at 07:00 from Tuesday to Sunday, and มายามี่, at 79/1 Phra Metta Road, serves brunch until 18:00.
Patong's late cafés sit close to the nightlife. Eddiez Nutrition Station and Phuketurk serve until 23:00, Pupa until 22:00, and Sandwich Shoppe cafe & Bar in Aroonsom Plaza until 23:45. Nightlife centers on Bangla Road and the Paradise Complex, and Bangla's own sois are named Crocodile, Eric, Gonzo and Seadragon.12 Inside Jungceylon, the SF cinema and bowling alley run until 01:00.2
Rooms get cheaper in the low and rainy season.2 For a quiet morning table, head to Nanai Road, the residential street furthest from the sand.2
