Phuket is Thailand's largest island, about 48 km long and 21 km across at its widest, on the Andaman Sea 862 km south of Bangkok.1 Most of its beaches face west, the airport is in the north, and Phuket Town, the provincial capital, sits on the south-east coast.1 The province, Thailand's second smallest, has three districts: Mueang Phuket, Kathu and Thalang.2

Tin paid for the old town. Mining drove the island's economy from the 16th century until it declined in the 20th, and many residents descend from 19th-century Chinese miners; the local Peranakan community, the Phuket Babas, has old ties to Penang and Malacca.2 In 2015 UNESCO named Phuket a Creative City of Gastronomy, the first in Southeast Asia.315

Phuket's coffee trade grew up around the mines too. Hock Hoe Lee started in 1958, when Cheng Long, a Chinese immigrant, sold freshly roasted coffee to tin-mine workers, and his family's third generation still roasts for many of the island's big hotels.4 Newer roasters work with Thai beans: Campus Coffee Roasters, on Krabi Road in the Old Town, began with single-origin coffee from northern Thailand and placed fourth runner-up at the 2019 International Coffee Roast Master Thailand.54

Kopi, dim sum and iced lattes in Phuket

Phuket's old breakfast is Hokkien and Indian-Muslim as much as Thai. In the Old Town's kopitiams (old-style coffee shops) the drink is kopi, the thick, sweet, creamy coffee locals favor, and one near Thalang Road charged about 40฿ a cup in 2026.67 Dim sum, called siew boi here, is eaten early with Chinese tea, and the roti shops pour cha-chuk, a frothy pulled tea-and-coffee mix served in a tall glass.6

Specialty cafés pour Thai mountain arabica, from Chiang Rai, Doi Chang and Doi Inthanon, as filter coffee.7 If you plan to work from one, the etiquette is a drink every 90 minutes to two hours and no four-person table to yourself when the room is full. Rainy-season power cuts can knock out the Wi-Fi for a while, so keep mobile data as a backup.7

Cafés start early and finish early: nearly half open by 08:00, and about four in ten close by 18:00. Kata & Karon has the most that serve until 21:00 or later, and three never close: Lucky 13 Sandwich on Soi Naya in Rawai, Eat me bakery and cafe on Mae Luan Road in Phuket Town, and Pancake and Peak on Patak Road in Karon.

The monsoon season runs from May to October, with rain mostly in the evenings; September is the wettest month, at about 350 mm, and February the driest.114 In the ninth Chinese lunar month, usually in September or October, the Vegetarian Festival brings nine days of rites.2 Locally it is Jia Chai, a Hokkien observance that ran 10–18 October in 2026; observers avoid animal products, and vegan stalls line the streets of Phuket Town.1312
