Karon and Kata are neighboring bays on the west coast, south of Patong. Karon Beach runs about 3 km, 8 km south of Patong on Route 4233 and about 20 km from Phuket Town; Kata Yai lies directly south, and Kata Noi about 1 km beyond it, over a hill on a narrow beach road.12

Karon is the island's second most developed beach after Patong.7 Both bays were badly damaged by the 2004 tsunami, along with Patong and Kamala.6 Their cafés now stay open into the evening, and no other area of Phuket has as many serving until 21:00 or later.

Local tip: Surf season, April to September, is also rip-current season at Karon: check the beach flags first, then warm up at Born to drink or Hangout, both open from 07:00.12

Buses, roads and the hill to Kata Noi

From Phuket Town, open-air buses leave the municipal bus terminal and Ranong Road, stop first in Karon and then wind back through Kata.2 The Smart Bus runs down the west coast too, at a flat 100฿ a trip since late 2022.7

Kata Road runs from the Karon end down to Kata Noi, and in Karon most restaurants and bars are near the north-central traffic circle or at the south end.21 If you rent a motorbike, the hill roads and traffic can be hard for first-time riders.1

Sand, surf and rip currents

Behind the north end of Karon Beach, Karon Park has a lagoon loop of about 1.4 km with outdoor fitness machines.3 At low tide runners use about 3 km of firm sand on the beach itself; go early, because there is no shade after 09:00.3

Kata Yai has no drop-offs and suits non-swimmers, but the flags on the beach show when swimming is unsafe.2 Rip currents are the main hazard at Karon, worst in the summer rainy season, and killed 10 people in 2009 alone.1 The same season brings the surf: April to September, mostly short, fast beach breaks, with Kata Noi best at low tide.2

Up to the Big Buddha

The Big Buddha on Nakkerd Hill, 45 m tall and clad in white Burmese marble, is the main Buddha image of Wat Kitthi Sankaram, also called Wat Kata.4 It is about 20 minutes by car from Kata and Karon, or a hike of about 2.5 km, roughly an hour, from Karon Beach.5 Entry is free from 09:00 to 18:00, and shoulders and knees must be covered.5
