Rawai is the seafront village at Phuket's southern tip, and Nai Harn, the quieter beach next to it, lies near the Laem Phromthep viewpoint.12 Rawai Beach itself is mostly for moored longtails and speedboats: it is one of the island's three main ports, with boats to the offshore islands, and seafood restaurants line the waterfront.1

Inland the two run together into a long-stay neighborhood. In 2023 Phuket's immigration chief said Russians extending their stay had taken up temporary residence mostly in Rawai and Chalong, away from the winter at home.4 Only Phuket Town, the Old Town and Chalong have more cafés than Rawai and Nai Harn, and the southern cluster serves its expat crowd avocado toast, breakfast burritos and Thai breakfasts.6

Local tip: German Bakery on Soi Naya opens at 06:00, an hour before Saturday's parkrun at Nai Harn lake; Maewsom Coffee opens at 06:30 but stops serving at 11:00.3

Getting around the southern tip

Rawai is spread out, so a motorbike is the practical way around; long rentals cost less per day.1 Laem Phromthep, with its high cliffs, lighthouse and shrine, is about 2 km from Rawai, and the Big Buddha about 25 minutes' drive away.17

Just north of Rawai pier is a sea-gypsy village, home to a formerly nomadic fishing community, with shops and longtail boats for hire; Ko Kaeo, about 3 km offshore, is roughly 30 minutes by boat.1 The new pier is for walking and fishing, not for boats.1

Nai Harn beach and lake

Nai Harn Beach is a few minutes from Rawai by motorbike, taxi or local bus, and Wikivoyage rates it one of the nicest on the island.1 Behind it, a flat, paved and mostly shaded loop of about 2 km circles the lake; the free, timed 5 km parkrun starts there on Saturdays at 07:00.3 Across the island, 17:00 to sunset is the busiest running window.3

Soi Sai Yuan and Soi Naya

Soi Sai Yuan (ซอยใสยวน) and Soi Naya, off it, hold many of the south's cafés. German Bakery on Soi Naya opens at 06:00, and Lucky 13 Sandwich, on the same soi, never closes. On Sai Yuan, The Syrniki at 39/65 serves syrniki (Russian farmer's-cheese pancakes) and brunch from 08:00, Neko Cat Cafe Phuket is at 39/57, and EAT stays open until 23:00.

More vegan cafés are in Rawai and Nai Harn than anywhere else on the island: Go Vegan Cafe, Go Fresh Organic Cafe on Soi Naya, and Wilson's Cafe, which also bakes and serves brunch. About a quarter of the area's cafés have Wi-Fi, a larger share than anywhere else on the island.

Wiset Road and Hock Hoe Lee

On Wiset Road (ถนนวิเศษ), Hock Hoe Lee, the roaster founded in 1958, keeps a coffee shop at number 28/9 that also sells teas, juices and whole-bean coffee for home brewing.5 Its Rawai café opens 08:00–17:30 from Monday to Saturday and until 17:00 on Sundays, with outdoor seating and vegan dishes.

Tara Cafe is at 90/28 Moo 6 on the same road, and Doo Cat Cafe, at 90/9 Ban Rawai–Ban Naihan Road, opens at noon. Maewsom Coffee is a morning-only stop: 06:30–11:00, closed on Thursdays. La Tarte Doree bakes from 07:00, Tuesday to Sunday, and The Book Cafe on Soi Suan Wat serves brunch 08:30–17:30 from Tuesday to Saturday.
