The Thai word on menus is มังสวิรัติ (mangsawirat, vegetarian), but Phuket's best-known meat-free food is jay (เจ): no meat, fish sauce, eggs or dairy, and no garlic, chili or strong spices either.1 It is eaten above all during the Vegetarian Festival, which runs for nine days from the first day of the ninth lunar month, usually in September or October.2
Outside festival time, Rawai and Nai Harn have the most vegan and vegetarian cafés, with Phuket Old Town second and one on Kata Road. In Old Town, jay cooking carries on all year around Jui Tui Shrine.
Local tip: During the festival, look for the yellow flag with a red เจ: it marks a stall or shop that cooks to the jay rules.1
Where these cafés are: Rawai & Nai Harn (5), Phuket Old Town (3), Kata & Karon (1).

The festival and its yellow flags
The festival traces back to 1825, when a Hokkien-speaking opera troupe from Fujian, touring Phuket during a cholera epidemic, blamed the outbreak on neglected worship and took up its home rites again.2 Kathu Shrine, established in the early 1800s, is described as the earliest birthplace of Nine Emperor Gods worship in Southeast Asia.1
Devotees dress in white and avoid alcohol and stimulants, and shops that follow the diet hang yellow flags with เจ written in red.1 In 2026 the festival opened with the Go Teng pole-raising on 9 October at 17:09, followed by vegetarian observance from 10 to 18 October at more than 40 Chinese shrines across the province.3
The Tourism Authority of Thailand listed Jui Tui Tao Bo Keng Shrine among the main sites.4 Organizers expected more than 140,000 visitors and at least ฿1.4 billion in local spending.3

The Vegan Table at 106 Rassada Road in Talat Yai opens 13:00–22:00 and closes on Wednesdays.6 Nearby, aera juice at 184 Phuket Road opens daily 09:00–21:00 with Wi-Fi.
