Hoàng Mai is Hanoi's southern sprawl of apartment blocks, lakes and former villages. It was created on 6 November 2003 by Decree 132/2003/NĐ-CP from five wards of Hai Bà Trưng and nine communes of Thanh Trì.1 By 2019 it had 506,347 residents on 40.32 km², more than any other Hanoi district.1

Coffee here is a local affair: the cafés are mostly neighborhood places for the people who live here, on through roads such as Giải Phóng, Trương Định and Trần Nguyên Đán and inside newer housing estates such as Gelexia on Tam Trinh.

Local tip: Yên Sở park closes after 19:00, so go in the morning window (07:00–11:00) and stop for coffee on Giải Phóng on the way back.

Fourteen old wards, new names

Before the reorganization Hoàng Mai had 14 wards, from Đại Kim and Định Công to Vĩnh Hưng and Yên Sở.1 Since 1 July 2025 its area has been spread mainly across Hoàng Mai, Tương Mai, Định Công, Hoàng Liệt, Yên Sở, Vĩnh Hưng and Lĩnh Nam wards.34

The new Hoàng Mai ward is assembled from parts of Giáp Bát, Hoàng Liệt, Hoàng Văn Thụ, Lĩnh Nam, Tân Mai, Thịnh Liệt, Tương Mai, Trần Phú, Vĩnh Hưng and Yên Sở.3 Tương Mai ward took what remained of Mai Động, Tân Mai and Tương Mai along with parts of Minh Khai, Đồng Tâm and Trương Định, so a café on Trương Định may now carry a Tương Mai address.3

Định Công ward reaches beyond the old district line, taking parts of the former Tân Triều and Thanh Liệt communes as well as Định Công and Đại Kim.3 Yên Sở park now sits in Yên Sở ward.2
