Hai Bà Trưng, named for the two Trưng sisters, starts where the French Quarter ends and runs south past Thống Nhất park to the university campuses on Đại Cồ Việt. Its coffee reputation rests on one street, Triệu Việt Vương, which a 2015 Lonely Planet feature said had more cafés than anywhere else.1

It is a working neighborhood rather than a sight, and Triệu Việt Vương has the most cafés, well ahead of Lê Đại Hành, Bùi Thị Xuân and Tô Hiến Thành.

Local tip: With the ticket booth gone, Thống Nhất park costs nothing to enter, so a walk around Thiền Quang lake on Trần Nhân Tông fits easily between two coffees.

Thống Nhất park and Thiền Quang lake

Thống Nhất park used to charge adults 4,000₫ and children 2,000₫, and the ticket income did not cover the sellers' wages.23 In December 2022 workers removed about 400 m of its fence along Trần Nhân Tông to open the park toward a pedestrian zone around Thiền Quang lake, and ticket sales were halted.3 The city's plan was to stop charging altogether from 1 January 2023.2

The removed stretch ran from the wastewater plant entrance on Trần Nhân Tông to Nguyễn Đình Chiểu street, and the rest of the fence was to come down once the city approved a plan to renovate the park.3

Universities and the southern streets

Two universities founded in 1956 anchor the south of the area: Hanoi University of Science and Technology at 1 Đại Cồ Việt, which had about 38,000 students in 2023, and the National Economics University.45 The Sipping Bar on Đại Cồ Việt opens 09:00–21:30, and Cafe Mộc at 75 Trần Đại Nghĩa and Cà Phê Góc Phố on the same street open 07:00–23:00.

The new ward map

Since 1 July 2025 the old district has been split into three main wards. Hai Bà Trưng ward took Đồng Nhân and Phố Huế whole; Bạch Mai ward took Bạch Mai, Bách Khoa and Quỳnh Mai; and Vĩnh Tuy ward was formed from parts of Mai Động, Thanh Lương, Vĩnh Hưng and Vĩnh Tuy.6 The university at 1 Đại Cồ Việt now gives its address as Bạch Mai ward.4
