Ba Đình is Hanoi's political center, west of the Old Quarter. On 2 September 1945 Hồ Chí Minh read the declaration of independence on the square that gives the area its name, itself named after the Ba Đình uprising against the French in 1886–1887.1 The Presidential Palace dates from 1901, and many government offices and foreign embassies are based here.6

Away from the square the streets are residential, and the cafés serve the people who live and work on them. Ba Đình's cafés gather around Trúc Bạch lake, along Châu Long and Đội Cấn, and in the old collective housing blocks of Ngọc Khánh and Giảng Võ.

Local tip: Mausoleum visits are mornings only and never on Monday or Friday, so plan coffee for afterward; Every Half on Châu Long and Cà Phê Bigone on Đội Cấn both open at 07:00.
