Tây Hồ takes its name from West Lake (Hồ Tây), Hanoi's largest lake, which covers about 500 hectares and formed from a curved stretch of the Red River.12 The district was officially recognized on 28 October 1995 and is home to a large expatriate population, with many Western restaurants and boutiques.3

Tây Hồ's cafés follow the lake and the lanes behind it, from Quảng An and Từ Hoa to Tô Ngọc Vân and Xuân Diệu. Many of the smaller streets here are named after Vietnamese poets, artists and composers, Xuân Diệu among them.3

Local tip: West Lake's main daily event is sunset, seen best from the eastern side around Quảng An and Từ Hoa, so arrive well before it if you want a table.

The lake, its roads and its temples

Trấn Quốc pagoda, on Thanh Niên road, began as a 6th-century temple built under Emperor Lý Nam Đế and is counted among the capital's oldest.12 Thanh Niên itself started as a fishermen's embankment from Yên Hoa to Yên Ninh, kept up since the 17th century.4 Phủ Tây Hồ, at 52 Đặng Thai Mai, is a 17th-century temple entered through a tam quan, a three-part gate.2

Sources put the shoreline at 14.8 to 17 km, depending on how it is measured.12 The roads that ring the lake include Thanh Niên, Lạc Long Quân, Âu Cơ and Nghi Tàm, and VinWonders recommends August to October, when the weather is mildest.2

Âu Cơ and the north shore

Âu Cơ carries the Trịnh Công Sơn walking street and the Quảng Bá flower market.2 That night market has operated since 1996 and is one of the largest night flower markets in Vietnam.3

Tô Ngọc Vân, Xuân Diệu and Quảng An

Tô Ngọc Vân has more cafés than any other Tây Hồ street. Capella Coffee Roaster at 74 opens 06:00–18:00, Joma Bakery Cafe at 43 runs 07:00–21:00, LOW BATTERY NEED COFFEE at 49 runs 08:00–19:00 and Hai Cafe & Coworking Space at 80 runs 09:00–23:00. Ka Specialty Coffee is in lane 31 off Xuân Diệu (07:00–17:00), and Quảng An has ểnh ương at 12/26 (08:00–23:00) and Cà phê Hải Yến at 98.

Yên Phụ, one of the main routes in from Hoàn Kiếm, has Timeless at 198 (08:00–23:00) and Cà Phê Duy Trí at 43A.2 On Đặng Thai Mai, the street of Phủ Tây Hồ, Hưu Hạ Space in lane 6 is open 24 hours.

How the wards changed in 2025

On 1 July 2025 the old district was divided mainly between two wards. Tây Hồ ward took the whole of Bưởi and what remained of Nhật Tân, Quảng An, Tứ Liên and Yên Phụ, while Hồng Hà ward took other parts of those same wards together with Phúc Xá and Chương Dương.5 Addresses around Quảng An may therefore read either ward name.5
