Eimsbüttel is one of Hamburg’s most crowded quarters: 57,798 people lived on its 3.2 km² at the end of 2024, about 18,000 per km², second only to neighboring Hoheluft-West. First recorded in 1275 and part of Hamburg since 1894, it lost much of its old housing in the air raids of 1943, though Gründerzeit (late-19th-century) blocks still shape many streets.1
The quarter’s center is the Osterstraße U-Bahn station, and the Eimsbütteler Park Am Weiher and tree-lined streets make it greener than its density suggests.1 Portuguese families settled here from the 1960s, and their children and grandchildren keep its pastelarias and restaurants going.2
Local tip: For a Portuguese breakfast before work, Pastelaria Transmontana II on Lappenbergsallee opens at 07:00 on weekdays and Saturdays and at 08:00 on Sundays.

A branch line to Hellkamp opened in 1914; Hellkamp stopped being a station in 1964.1 The street keeps a few cafés: Café Eims at number 52 stays open to 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
The recruitment agreement of March 1964 brought Portuguese men to Hamburg on special trains. Many worked for companies around the port or for Beiersdorf and Valvo, two Eimsbüttel employers. The Associação Portuguesa, founded in the 1960s, had its headquarters on Heinrichstraße for years, with Hamburg’s first bilingual Portuguese-German kindergarten attached. When West Germany stopped recruiting in 1973, and again when returning home was encouraged in 1984, most Portuguese families stayed.2
Pastelaria Transmontana II at Lappenbergsallee 48 opens at 07:00 from Monday to Saturday. Its May 2026 menu charged €2.10 for an espresso, €2.80 for a small galão and €4.20 for a cappuccino.3 Café Estoril is at Osterstraße 158, and a second Café estoril is on Karl-Schneider-Passage.

Golden Bean, on Hellkamp, serves coffee from its own roasting and teaches barista courses.4 Public Coffee Roasters has a branch at Lappenbergsallee 43. Die kleine Konditorei at Lutterothstraße 9 is one of Hamburg Tourismus’s ten picks for Franzbrötchen.5
