HafenCity is Hamburg’s newest quarter, built on about 157 hectares of former port land on the Großer Grasbrook. Ground was first broken on 9 April 2001, it became a Stadtteil on 1 March 2008, and 8,062 people lived there at the end of 2024; the developer now expects to finish in the early 2030s, with homes for up to 16,000 people and jobs for up to 45,000.1

Between HafenCity and the old town stand the brick warehouses of the Speicherstadt, where coffee is still roasted and tasted. The Kaffeemuseum Burg occupies a coffee warehouse of 1896 on St. Annenufer, and the Speicherstadt Kaffeerösterei roasts every day in its café.23

Roasting and tasting in the Speicherstadt

The Kaffeemuseum Burg, in the Speicherstadt’s only vaulted cellar, roasts its coffee on a 1930s machine on the ground floor; the café and shop there are free to enter, and tours can be booked with a coffee tasting. It is closed on Mondays and open 10:00–18:00 the rest of the week.2

The Speicherstadt Kaffeerösterei on Kehrwieder offers about 40 coffees and espressos, with roasting visible from the café and a terrace.3 The trade also uses it: in February 2026 the German Coffee Association held its two-day seminar for newcomers to the industry there, with workshops on roasting, cupping and brewing.5 The café is open daily 10:00–18:00.

Kaffeeklappen: the port’s own coffee halls

Long before the warehouses held cafés, the free port fed dock and shipyard workers in Kaffeeklappen. A Volks-Kaffee- und Speise-Halle stood at the Amerikakai from 1889, and the Fleetschlösschen in the Speicherstadt served as one for a time. The larger halls fed up to 800 harbor workers and were subsidized by the Hamburg Senate.6

The Oberhafenkantine on the eastern edge of HafenCity is one of the last survivors, much smaller than the halls of old.6
