WLAN is the German word for Wi-Fi, and open networks in cafés are a fairly recent habit. Café owners could long be held liable as a Störer (interferer) for what guests did on their network, an exposure that law firms built a business of warning letters on; an amendment to the Telemedia Act removed that liability from 13 October 2017, although a 2018 federal court ruling still lets rights holders demand measures such as a password or registration.1
The Altstadt & Neustadt has the most cafés with Wi-Fi, followed by St. Georg, with Winterhude, Eimsbüttel, Eppendorf & Hoheluft and Ottensen level behind it. Most of these cafés also have tables outside, and close to half serve vegan options.
Local tip: For an early start with Wi-Fi in the HafenCity, Kaffeklappe at Zweibrückenstraße 4 opens at 07:30 on weekdays; at weekends it opens at 08:30 and closes at 16:00.
Where these cafés are: Altstadt & Neustadt (10), St. Georg (7), Winterhude (6), Eppendorf & Hoheluft (6), Eimsbüttel (6), Ottensen (6), St. Pauli (5), Uhlenhorst (3), Altona (3), Rotherbaum & Harvestehude (2), Sternschanze (2), Barmbek (2), Hohenfelde, Borgfelde & Eilbek (1), Speicherstadt & HafenCity (1), Hammerbrook, Hamm & Rothenburgsort (1).

If a café has no network of its own, the public one may reach it. MobyKlick, the free Wi-Fi of the Hamburg metropolitan region, is available at more than 4,000 places in Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony, from the Rathausmarkt to the Stadtpark and some cafés.2
Select the network named MobyKlick and a login page opens in the browser; one click on verbinden (connect) gives four hours online, and you can reconnect as often as you like once the time runs out. This open access is unencrypted, unlike the MobyKlick(S) network reserved for the operator's own customers.3
Deichstraße has Wi-Fi at both ends: Nord Coast's roastery café at number 9 is open daily 09:00–17:00, and 4 Walls at number 47 Monday to Friday 09:00–19:00. Nord Coast takes table reservations at weekends and on public holidays only.4
Near the Kontorhaus district, Marshall Street Café at Schopenstehl 30 opens at 08:00 on weekdays and 09:00 at weekends, and Die Rösterei Coffeum at Steinstraße 19a serves Monday to Saturday from 10:00. On Mönckebergstraße, OMEN Café at number 21 is open Monday to Saturday 10:00–18:00.
St. Georg's Wi-Fi cafés run along Lange Reihe, where hugsandcoffee at number 102 opens Monday to Saturday from 09:00 and Le Parisien at number 71 from 08:00, Tuesday to Sunday. Mutterland's flagship by the Hauptbahnhof spreads a delicatessen and café over two floors and 1,000 m², with a terrace open all year, and the company invites guests to eat upstairs and get some work done at the same time.5 The Mutterland Café on Kirchenallee serves until 23:00 from Thursday to Saturday.
Near Berliner Tor, Café Berliner Tor at number 5 and the cafeteria at Alexanderstraße 1 both open at 07:45 from Monday to Thursday. At the university in Rotherbaum, the Studierendenwerk runs Café CampusBlick at Von-Melle-Park 8, open Monday to Thursday 09:00–18:00.6
In Eimsbüttel, Emilienstraße has two: Maison Émilie at number 78 opens at 07:30 on weekdays, and THIRDROOM at 22–24 closes at 17:17. Weidenkantine at Weidenallee 61 is open daily 09:00–17:00. In Winterhude, Golden Bean at Gertigstraße 12 and Isioka at Poßmoorweg 9 open at 08:00 on weekdays, and Bean There at Forsmannstraße 27 stays open until 19:00 on Thursdays and Fridays.
Few Wi-Fi cafés keep evening hours. Mimosa at Clemens-Schultz-Straße 87 in St. Pauli opens in the evenings from Wednesday to Saturday, with Flammkuchen (Alsatian flatbread) and wines from the Palatinate.7 In Ottensen, Ribatejo at Bahrenfelder Straße 56 stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

MobyKlick is the free public Wi-Fi of the Hamburg region, available at more than 4,000 places, including the Rathausmarkt and the Stadtpark. Choose the network MobyKlick, click verbinden on the login page and you are online for four hours; you can reconnect as often as you like. The open network is unencrypted.
The Altstadt & Neustadt has the most, with Nord Coast and 4 Walls on Deichstraße. St. Georg comes next, then Winterhude and Eimsbüttel, level with Eppendorf and Ottensen: Lange Reihe in St. Georg, Gertigstraße and Poßmoorweg in Winterhude, and Emilienstraße and Weidenallee in Eimsbüttel.
From 13 October 2017 an amendment to the Telemedia Act ended the so-called Störerhaftung, under which Wi-Fi operators such as cafés could be held liable for guests' illegal downloads and sent costly warning letters. A 2018 federal court ruling still allows rights holders to demand measures such as a password or registration.
Free listings are free for good. A featured page gives you photos, a menu and your own URL, in your café's own design, for less than a coffee a day.
