Sternschanze takes its name from a star-shaped fortification of 1682, strong enough that a Danish siege failed in 1686. Small and crowded, with 7,669 residents on 0.6 km² at the end of 2024, it became a Stadtteil of the Altona borough only on 1 March 2008.1

Schulterblatt, its main street, is named after a 17th-century inn sign and marked the border between Hamburg and Altona until 1938; five boundary stones remain on its eastern sidewalk. Students moved in from the 1970s, and gentrification has been argued over ever since.1

Local tip: Transmontana at Schulterblatt 86 opens at 07:00 from Monday to Saturday and 08:00 on Sunday, and stays open until 23:00 from Thursday to Saturday; a small galão cost €2.80 there in May 2026.
