Eppendorf is counted as Hamburg’s oldest village, recorded as Eppenthorp in 1140. Today 25,234 people live on its 2.7 km² west of the Alster, and the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, founded in 1884, is its largest landmark. Much of its housing went up between its incorporation into Hamburg in 1894 and the First World War.1

Hoheluft lies to the west, and Hoheluft-West is the most densely populated quarter in Hamburg.2 Between them run Eppendorfer Weg, Hegestraße, Lehmweg and Hoheluftchaussee, residential streets with cafés on the ground floors.

Local tip: Combine the Isemarkt with breakfast: the market opens at 08:30 on Tuesdays and Fridays, and Cafe Hagelstein on Bismarckstraße is already open from 06:00.
