Winterhude lies north of the Außenalster, cut through by canals. It had 61,192 residents at the end of 2024 on 7.6 km², the third-largest Hamburg quarter by population in 2023. Mühlenkamp, with its shops, and Gertigstraße, with its pubs and restaurants, form the center of the south.1
Elbgold, the roaster founded by Annika Taschinski and Thomas Kliefoth, began with a café on Mühlenkamp.2 The branch at Mühlenkamp 59 opens at 07:00 on weekdays, 08:00 on Saturdays and 09:00 on Sundays.
Local tip: Sunday mornings start late on Mühlenkamp, where Elbgold opens at 09:00; Éclair au café on Lattenstieg serves from 07:00 every day.

The U3 stops at Sierichstraße, Borgweg and Saarlandstraße, and the U1 at Hudtwalckerstraße and Lattenkamp; in Winterhude every one of these lines runs above ground.1 Alster steamers ran between the Jungfernstieg and Winterhude from the 1860s, and the Winterhuder Fährhaus, built in 1865 for that service, now houses the Komödie Winterhuder Fährhaus theater.1
Julius Gertig bought the Mühlenkamp farmstead in 1858 and turned it into a large excursion venue, served by steamer from 1859.1 The street named after him now has a café every few doors: Little Leos at number 11 and Golden Bean at 12 open at 08:00 on weekdays, and Caravela at 37 is a Portuguese café whose May 2026 menu listed a bica at €2.00 and a pastel de nata at €1.50.3
On Mühlenkamp, no6 café and Paledo Cafe and Deli are at the low numbers, and Luicella’s Ice Cream at number 21 stays open until 22:00. Stockholm Coffee Roasters, on Peter-Marquard-Straße, has a plain Swedish interior and serves cake, bagels and craft beer with its coffee; it closes on Tuesdays.4
The Goldbekkanal and Osterbekkanal carried busy barge traffic until the 1960s; in summer they now belong to canoeists.1 At Fernsicht 2 on the Außenalster, Bobby Reich combines a restaurant-café with a boat rental: rowing boats, canoes and sailboats for up to four people by the hour, from April to September, with sailboats allowed only on the Außenalster.5
East of the canals, Jarrestadt is a social housing estate of dark red brick begun in 1926, one of Hamburg’s largest of the 20th century.1 Rang Rang on Jarrestraße stays open to 22:00 from Tuesday to Sunday, and Vibes Coffee at Goldbekplatz 1 runs to 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
The Stadtpark, about 148 hectares, opened in 1914 to plans by Fritz Schumacher and Ferdinand Sperber. Its Planetarium was built as a water tower in 1912–15 and converted in 1930.6 Schmidt & Schmidtchen at the Planetarium is one of Hamburg Tourismus’s ten picks for Franzbrötchen.7
The Trinkhalle at Otto-Wels-Straße and Südring once sold mineral water and became a café in 2013; Landhaus Walter, a brick building that survived the wartime bombing, stands on the same street.6 From October the Trinkhalle opens Thursday to Sunday, and Café Landhaus Walter only at weekends, from 14:00 on Saturday and 13:00 on Sunday.
