A Konditorei is a pastry shop with tables, where cakes and tortes come from the house's own bakery and are eaten with coffee. Konditorei Lindtner at Eppendorfer Landstraße 88 is the grand version: petits fours, Baumkuchen (layered spit cake), pralines and tortes, served in a café in the style of a Viennese coffeehouse or outside in good weather, 365 days a year.1
Bakery cafés are spread across the city. The Altstadt & Neustadt has the most, ahead of Winterhude and Altona, and the range runs from tortes and marzipan to Portuguese custard tarts, bagels and cheesecake.
Local tip: For Portuguese pastry after dinner, go to Transmontana on Schulterblatt, which its owners list as open until 23:00 from Thursday to Saturday.8
Where these cafés are: Altstadt & Neustadt (10), Winterhude (9), Altona (8), Eimsbüttel (7), St. Pauli (6), Hohenfelde, Borgfelde & Eilbek (4), Hammerbrook, Hamm & Rothenburgsort (4), Rotherbaum & Harvestehude (3), Eppendorf & Hoheluft (3), Sternschanze (3), St. Georg (3), Barmbek (3), Ottensen (3), Uhlenhorst (3), Speicherstadt & HafenCity (2), Stellingen & Lokstedt (1).

In Barmbek, Ulrich Münch and his team have baked at Weidestraße 26 since 1988: cakes, rolls and tortes, plus custom Motivtorten (decorated cakes) and marzipan figures made to order.2 The Conditorei opens at 07:30 from Wednesday to Saturday and takes cash only.
Elisa – Konditorei und Café at Conventstraße 21 in Eilbek closes on Tuesdays only, and in Winterhude, Jeff's Cheesecake Café at Linnering 5 opens from 12:00 on weekdays and from 11:00 at weekends.
Portuguese pastry arrived with families such as the Oliveiras. Aniceto Oliveira, a trained pastry cook, came to Germany with his wife Emilia in 1987 and started with a Portuguese grocery on Repsoldstraße; three years later he took over a shop and café at Schulterblatt 86, which became the Pastelaria Transmontana.3 The family calls it the first Portuguese Konditorei in Hamburg.3
Joao Oliveira trained as a pastry cook in Porto, and in March 1997 he and his brother Vitor opened Transmontana II at Lappenbergsallee 48; since 2018 the baking has been done on Schnackenburgsallee, which also supplies hotels and shops.3 In October 2026 the table menu online listed a large galão, the milky Portuguese coffee, at €4.40 and bolinhos de bacalhau (salt-cod croquettes) at €1.80.4
Pasteleria Cristal at Reimarusstraße 4, which takes cash only, is close to the Portugiesenviertel, the Portuguese quarter north of the Elbe by the Landungsbrücken.5
The Franzbrötchen, Hamburg's cinnamon pastry, is on almost every counter. In October 2026 the Schanzenbäckerei sold one for €2.10, made with cream, whole egg, cinnamon and a little cardamom.6 Its branch at Holstenplatz 20–22 in Altona opens every day at 04:00 and closes at 19:00, one of the earliest starts in the city.
Braaker Mühle, a bakery with a tradition going back to 1859, bakes its rolls fresh each day in Braak with house sourdoughs, lets bread doughs rest for at least 18 hours and runs Franz-Wochen, weeks devoted to the Franzbrötchen.7 Its café at Hofweg 70 in Uhlenhorst opens at 06:07 from Monday to Saturday.
