Kemang takes its name from the kemang, a local mango, and was a quiet Betawi kampung until land sales from the late 1970s made it an expatriate district close to the Golden Triangle.1 In 1998 Governor Sutiyoso rezoned it from residential to commercial and many houses became shops; since 2001 the Kemang Festival has closed its streets to traffic once or twice a year.1

Cafés follow Jalan Kemang Raya, the spine, and the Kemang Selatan and Kemang Utara streets, with a second cluster on Jalan Pangeran Antasari. There is no rail station: Transjakarta feeder route 6N runs from Blok M to Ragunan through Kemang.1

Local tip: In the rainy season, December to March, check the forecast before driving to Kemang and park at street level rather than in a basement.

Rain, floods and traffic

Kemang lies between the Krukut and Mampang rivers and floods in the rainy season; its narrow roads also jam at busy hours.1 On 27 August 2016, after more than an hour of heavy rain, the Krukut overflowed: water stood 30–70 cm deep across the area and about 1.7 m in one neighborhood, and visitors abandoned cars in flooded café and restaurant basements.5 The city's water agency admitted afterward that the river had not been dredged for years.5

Jakarta's wet season runs from December to March, and January and February are the wettest months.6 In the 2016 flood, café and restaurant basements filled with water, so park at street level in those months.
