Tebet was marshland of fish ponds and canals, and its name comes from tebat, a fish pond.1 It was planned in the early 1960s to rehouse families moved out of Senayan for the Gelora Bung Karno stadium complex, built for the 1962 Asian Games; Tebet Barat and Tebet Timur were built first. Barack Obama lived here from 1967 to 1971.1
Tebet Barat and Tebet Timur still shape the café map. Jalan Tebet Timur Dalam Raya has the longest run of cafés, with more on Jalan Tebet Raya near the station and on the numbered lanes of Tebet Barat. Many stay open late: only Tanjung Duren, in West Jakarta, has more cafés that do.
