Kopi spesialti, specialty coffee, is a young trade in Jakarta. The Jakarta Post traced the city's coffee-shop boom to the early 2000s and noted that before it, a decent cup of Java coffee was hard to find even on Java.1 The coffee trainer Adi W. Taroepratjeka told the paper that until about 2005 good Indonesian beans were difficult to buy at home, because they were exported.1
Anomali Coffee, started by Irvan Helmi and Muhammad Abgari, opened in 2007; by 2013 roasted beans made up more than a third of its sales.1 The independent roasters are now spread across the city. Menteng and Kuningan have the most, Blok M comes next, and smaller groups sit in Kota Tua, Senopati, Kemang and West Jakarta.
Local tip: Giyanti closes on Mondays.6 On a Monday, Bukanagara in Graha CIMB Niaga is open 07:00–22:00 and pours single-origin West Java arabica.3

A coffee lab in Kota Tua's Olveh building
Coffee Lab - Kopling at Olveh works inside one of the old town's restored offices, at Jalan Jembatan Batu No. 50. The building went up in 1921–1922 for Olveh, a Dutch life insurer, to a design by the brothers Richard and Wolff Schoemaker. The government took it over in 1961 and gave it to the state insurer Jiwasraya, and it was abandoned during the 1998 riots.4
The Jakarta Old Town Revitalization Corporation restored it for almost Rp3 billion, The Jakarta Post reported in 2016.4 Kopi Kopling now uses it as a lab that trains people who work in coffee, and the building also hosts pop-up exhibitions and workshops.5 Elsewhere in the center, Roast Coffee Ketapang is on Jalan Kyai Haji Zainul Arifin and Empo Coffee Roastery is in Bendungan Hilir.
What a pour-over costs in Jakarta
In February 2025 Time Out listed a V60 at Rp60,000 and a flat white at Rp38,000 at 1/15 Coffee, a shop that Nathalia Gunawan opened in Gandaria in June 2012 and named after its 1:15 coffee-to-water ratio.67 The same month Giyanti Coffee Roastery on Jalan Surabaya charged Rp50,000 for its es pasar antik, a palm-sugar latte, and closes on Mondays.6

World of Coffee in Jakarta, May 2025
From 15 to 17 May 2025 the Jakarta International Convention Center hosted World of Coffee, organized by Exporum Korea with the Specialty Coffee Association of Indonesia. It was the first edition held in Indonesia; the show usually goes to coffee-consuming countries rather than producers.9
More than 300 exhibitors from five countries took part. New for Jakarta were a Farmers Village for coffee from Indonesian growers and a Nusantara Pavilion where regional governments presented their own beans. Daryanto Witarsa, the association's chairman, said the industry had waited ten years for it.9
