Jakarta had more than 11 million registered residents in 2025, and it grew south from the port the Dutch East India Company seized in 1619 and rebuilt as Batavia.1 The coffee map runs the same way. In Kota Tua, Cafe Batavia fills an 1830s building on the northwest corner of Fatahillah Square; an Australian buyer restored it and opened it as a café in 1993.2 In Menteng, Phoenam pours Toraja coffee on Jalan Wahid Hasyim, a coffee house that began in Makassar in 1946.34

The drink that remade the city's cafés is es kopi susu gula aren: coffee, fresh milk and palm sugar, usually over ice.5 Toko Kopi Tuku opened in Cipete on 1 June 2015 and called its version Kopi Susu Tetangga, "the neighbor's milk coffee", after the residents it first sold to; President Joko Widodo stopped by in 2017 and sales took off.67 Kopi Kenangan, founded in 2017 with its first outlet in Kuningan, had passed 900 outlets by 2024.8

Roasting grew in the same years. Giyanti Coffee Roastery opened in a tiny space in Menteng in 2012, and by 2022 roasteries ran from Cilandak in the south to Pluit on the coast, many working with beans from Aceh, Bali, Flores and Toraja.9 Fore Coffee, now a national chain, started in August 2018 as a booth on the second floor of Otten Coffee's store on Jalan Senopati.10

How to order coffee in Jakarta

Kopi is coffee, susu is milk, es means iced and gula aren is palm sugar, so es kopi susu gula aren is iced milk coffee sweetened with palm sugar. Made at home it goes in layers: liquid palm sugar at the bottom of the glass, then milk, then coffee poured slowly on top.5 Chains let you set the sweetness; from its early days Kopi Kenangan sold its signature hot or cold, sweet or with less sugar, using fresh milk rather than sweetened condensed milk.11

The cheapest cup comes from a starling, short for Starbucks keliling (mobile Starbucks), though the bicycle sellers have no link to the chain. They hang dozens of instant-coffee sachets from the handlebars, strap flasks of hot water and an ice box behind the saddle, and work sidewalks, parks and building sites from dawn to midnight.12 In May 2026 a plastic cup cost Rp5,000–8,000 on the pavements of Kebayoran Baru.13

Aceh-style coffee houses serve sanger: Aceh coffee and sweetened condensed milk in a balanced ratio, shaken until frothy, lighter than black coffee. The name is read as sama-sama mengerti, "mutual understanding".14 At one such house in Bukit Duri, Tebet, drinks started at Rp6,000 in July 2026.15

Tipping is not expected at a warung (small family-run eatery), though rounding up is common. Cafés in malls and business districts often add a 5–10% service charge, and "++" after menu prices means tax and service come on top.16 Jakarta's food and drink tax is 10%; businesses with a monthly turnover under Rp42 million are exempt.17 Working from a café is common enough to have its own acronym, WFC.13
