Menteng was planned as a garden suburb of Batavia. Planning began in 1910, P.A.J. Moojen's revised layout was presented in 1912, and F.J. Kubatz later reworked the street pattern and added the Situ Lembang pond.1 A 1975 decree made it a heritage area, and Barack Obama spent part of his childhood here, at Besuki Public School and Saint Francis of Assisi School.1

Coffee gathers on its commercial edges. Jalan Sabang, officially Jalan Haji Agus Salim, turned to shops, hotels and restaurants in the 1980s.1 Jalan Cikini Raya, about 1 km long, runs through what was part of Weltevreden, the colonial district where most Europeans lived.2 Roasters sit on the residential streets: Giyanti on Jalan Surabaya and Opal on Jalan Riau.

Local tip: Reach Jalan Sabang from the Sarinah Transjakarta stop by walking through the back of the department store, and go on a weekday: Saturday evenings bring the biggest crowds.
