Kebayoran Baru was first conceived by the Dutch in 1938 and built from 1948 to Mohammad Soesilo's master plan, a garden city divided into blocks lettered A to S.1 Blok M was its commercial and transit center, and it still has Jakarta's largest bus station and the Blok M BCA MRT station, which connects directly to Blok M Plaza.1

Its malls peaked in the 1980s and early 1990s and declined after the Asian financial crisis.1 The revival has leaned on food and drink: M Bloc Space opened in late 2019, and a refurbished mall reopened as Blok M Hub on 25 May 2025 with a culinary focus.21

Local tip: Take the MRT to Blok M BCA station, walk to Melawai for a pour-over at Kurasu Kissaten, then on to the cafés of Jalan Cikajang.
