The southeast of the city carries two very different pasts. Colhuacan, at the foot of the Cerro de la Estrella, was an ancient lordship with a ruling line traditionally dated to 717; by 1347 it was a tributary of Tenochtitlan.1 Canal Nacional, about 12 km long and one of two open-air channels left in the city, still marks the Coyoacán and Xochimilco boundaries.2

Coapa itself goes by many local names, among them Espartaco, Prado Coapa, Granjas Coapa and Nueva Oriental Coapa, and Chilango’s guide presents it as a neighborhood with more to it than its shopping malls.3 Its coffee includes local roasters and a café with live music.4

Local tip: Ask about tastings at Inka Yani on Cafetales: Chilango’s guide lists them alongside artisanal brewing, at prices below the big chains.3

Inka Yani and its roasts on Cafetales

Inka Yani, on Avenida Cafetales in Granjas Coapa, is both a café and a roasting brand, and Chilango reported in 2022 that its roasts had won awards around Mexico.4 An earlier Chilango guide praised its artisanal brewing methods and tastings, and noted that prices came in below the big chains; green matcha and espresso were the popular orders.3

The same list also likes its seasonal decorations, so the room changes through the year.4

Cafetal Chilango Tostaduría Coapa

Cafetal Chilango Tostaduría Coapa is the most unusual business here, tied to coffee actually grown in the capital.5 The firm’s entry in the IFOAM organics directory says it grows shade coffee in Mexico City itself, on a very tiny scale, and roasts organic coffee from small producer cooperatives in Chiapas.5

Its own site places its roastery in the colonia Arboledas del Sur, in Tlalpan, and its coffee bar and shop on Miguel Ángel de Quevedo in Coyoacán.6 The menu at the café is mainly organic and vegan.5

La Nieta del Jarocho on División del Norte

La Nieta del Jarocho sits on Prolongación División del Norte in Nueva Oriental Coapa.7 Its site describes a high-altitude Arabica blend of about 80% Veracruz and 20% Oaxaca, with drinks and bread, breakfasts and specialties on the menu.7

Café Literario is further north on the same avenue, at División del Norte 3421, and offers Wi-Fi for a longer sit.

Jazz in Espartaco, pizza in Avante

Café y Pan...Por Tradición, on a corner of Calle 1 and Calle 4 in Espartaco, is known for its desserts and for live music, with jazz nights on Thursdays when Chilango wrote it up in 2022.4 Qisu Café, at Calle 61 3 in Avante, serves pizzas and crepes as well as coffee and is popular with locals; Chilango called it one of the coziest on its list.4

Toward Culhuacán, Rock Paradise Café keeps to an apartment-block andador (walkway) in the CTM housing estate, and Verdi Café is on Avenida Canal Nacional at number 32-B. The channel took that name in 1856 from Mariano Ayllón, who launched the country’s first steamboat line on it.2 For the small hours, El vagoncito feliz is open around the clock.
