Tlalpan became part of the Federal District in 1855, and its center has kept a plaza with a conical-roofed kiosk from 1872 and a market of about 1900 with its original facade.1 Animal Gourmet described it in 2019 as cobbled streets, large haciendas and a slower pace than the rest of the city.2
There is no Metro in the borough, and light rail and Metrobús Line 1 do the job instead.1 Its other café cluster serves the Zona de Hospitales in San Fernando, home to nine of the country’s twelve national health institutes.1
Local tip: A map of the Centro is available from the tourist kiosk by the arches, which Time Out recommended as the place to begin a walk.4

Café Katsina and four generations in coffee
Café Katsina, on Madero, comes from a family that spent four generations in the trade, first exporting, then selling under its own brands, and finally growing, roasting and serving its own coffee from farms in Veracruz, according to Time Out in 2013.3 A 2015 Time Out walk gave Coatepec as the origin.4 Its name refers to the katsinas of Hopi tradition, figures described as messengers between people and the gods.3
The café now presents itself as direct-trade and single-origin, certified by Pronatura for biodiversity, and runs barista courses.5 Beans are ground to order and sold to take home.23
Aurora Café and the Mercado de La Paz
Aurora Café, at the corner of Plaza de la Constitución and Guadalupe Victoria, works from local 16 of the Mercado de La Paz, and Animal Gourmet praised its beans from Soconusco, Chiapas, along with breakfasts, bakery items, quiches and beer.2 The market itself dates from 1900 and is one of the few from the Porfiriato still standing.4
Make it a morning: Time Out’s route treats the market as the breakfast stop for garnachas (fried corn snacks), and the Museo de la Historia de Tlalpan, in an 1874 mansion, shows the telephone used for Mexico’s first long-distance call, in 1878. Casa Frissac, a late-19th-century residence, is an art gallery with free music and painting classes.4
Congreso Café and the bakeries on its street
Congreso Café, on Calle Congreso, is the serious bar of the Centro: Food and Pleasure noted its own roaster, manual brewing methods, French bakery and matcha in June 2026, and a walking guide that October added its Brew Bar competition awards.67
Pomelo is at the other end of the numbering, at Congreso 2, for anyone walking in from the plaza.
Café Galeno and the hospital zone
Café Galeno started from an unusual customer base, and says so: its site describes coffee bars specialized in serving doctors, nurses and health students as well as the general public.8 Food and Pleasure counted three branches in Tlalpan in 2026, all with tables for staying, known for cold brew and for selecting and roasting their own beans.6
The branches on Calzada de Tlalpan put it on a road that viceroy Antonio de Mendoza laid out between 1535 and 1551.1 Café Tumbalá Tlalpan is at 4377 on the same road.
