San Ángel was the Tepanec settlement of Tenanitla, then San Jacinto Tenanitla, before the wealth of the Carmelite Colegio de San Ángel Mártir, built between 1615 and 1624, gave the town a new name. The friars’ walled orchard fed much of the capital’s markets until it was subdivided in 1906.1

Weekends set the pace. The Bazar Sábado, founded in 1960 on Plaza San Jacinto, sells art and crafts on Saturdays, and its trade spilled across the San Jacinto and Tenanitla plazas and drew restaurants and services with it.1 Coffee here is often something you drink between galleries, in converted houses.2

Local tip: Saturdays bring the Bazar Sábado and its crowds to Plaza San Jacinto, so go to Avenida Universidad or Avenida de la Paz if you want a table without the wait.1

Café De Las Artes in a 19th-century villa

Café De Las Artes is inside Villa San Jacinto, at Plaza San Jacinto 16, a 19th-century country house reopened as a cultural and shopping center.2 Food and Pleasure described it in 2023 as a Porfirian-style café with a bakery, in a building of grisaille stained glass, Bohemian chandeliers, Catalan vaults and gardens, restored by Pabellón de Arquitectura.2

Time Out’s 2018 notes give the menu: infusions and coffee, plus soup of the day, paninis, salads and desserts, with a few tables on a terrace.3 Between coffees you can look at the villa’s galleries, Casa Mendiola and Galería EXU, without going back onto the plaza.2

Tea and coffee on Amargura

Tomás - Casa Editora de Té is the tea stop, and Time Out counted it among the roughly 25 stalls of Mercado del Carmen, a remodeled colonial house a few steps from Plaza San Jacinto.3 The same market held cookie, chocolate and pastry stalls when Time Out wrote it up in 2018, so a pot of tea need not come alone.3

Díaz de Café shares the Amargura 5 address, which makes the block useful for a group that can’t agree on tea or coffee. Amargura means bitterness in Spanish, a fair warning if you take your espresso without sugar.

Odisea CineCafé and the board-game room on Avenida de la Paz

Avenida de la Paz is the evening option. Odisea CineCafé, on the first floor at number 57, is an independent cinema with a café and bar, and its schedule in early November 2026 mixed Santa Sangre, Heathers: The Musical and Only Lovers Left Alive.4 It adds cineclubs, karaoke, tastings, and a trivia night one Friday a month at 20:00.4

At the same street number, Avalon, café y juegos de mesa is what its name says, a café for board games. It opens at 15:00 on weekdays except Tuesday and at 14:00 on weekends, and stays open until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.

Buentono and the coffee east of the plaza

Buentono Café, on Avenida Universidad at number 1887, calls itself a specialty coffee bar with homemade baking, and has run barista courses for customers who want to brew better at home.5 The name echoes a line by Juan Bautista Alberdi that it quotes, about a house breathing order and buen tono (good form).5

Comité Cerezo, a human rights organization, has its own cafeteria, Café del Comité Cerezo.6 For long hours, La Victoria, on Avenida Miguel Ángel de Quevedo, opens from 06:00 to 23:30 every day.
