Nápoles grew over farmland and an old brickworks. After the Nochebuena brick kiln closed around 1893, the site was planted with trees and became Parque Hundido; building began slowly in 1908, and its streets take the names of US states and cities.1 Since the 1970s its skyline has been the World Trade Center tower and the Polyforum Siqueiros, with David Alfaro Siqueiros’s largest mural.1

South of it, Mixcoac is far older, a Tepanec settlement absorbed by the city only in the 20th century; Metro Lines 7 and 12 meet there, and Metrobús Line 1 runs through.2 The cafés run from a bar built around a rare espresso machine to rooms that serve breakfast all day.36

Local tip: Hey! Brew Bar is near the World Trade Center, whose convention halls are the likeliest reason a visitor comes to Nápoles.14

Hey! Brew Bar on Calle Texas

Hey! Brew Bar has been reviewed as a specialty address since at least 2015. When Time Out visited in October 2015, it had a Victoria Arduino Black Eagle espresso machine, which the magazine called the first in Mexico, and offered Chemex, Kalita and drip for its americanos.3 The Coffeevine reported in 2016 that owner Rodrigo Moreno worked only with Mexican growers, including a Typica from Nayarit, roasted by Café Sublime in Guadalajara.4

The menu has since widened. Food and Pleasure’s 2023 and 2024 reviews lead with its cold coffee: a cold brew tonic and a flotante of mineral water, coffee concentrate and vanilla ice cream, plus chilaquiles and molletes for breakfast.56 The 2024 list sets it beside Café Breck on Pensilvania.6 It opens daily from 09:00 to 22:00.

Café Breck and Pensilvania

Pensilvania is one of the streets that crosses the colonia end to end.1 Café Breck, at number 63, is small and built around an all-day breakfast with varied and lighter options, according to Food and Pleasure’s 2024 list of Nápoles cafés.6 Further along at number 255, Chiandoni opens daily from 11:00 to 21:00, with tables outside.

Elsewhere in the colonia, Demente Café on Tennessee does brunch and has Wi-Fi from 08:00 until 21:30, Monday to Saturday.

Medieval Coffee Shop and San Pedro de los Pinos

West across Avenida Patriotismo, the numbered streets of San Pedro de los Pinos replace the state names. Medieval Coffee Shop, on Calle 7, is less a tavern than a coffee business: its own site says it produces organic coffee in Chiapas, advises people opening cafés and sells machinery, along with books, shishas and tobacco.7

Mascabado Café is on the same street at number 70, and El Cafeto is two streets over on Calle 9.

Village Café by Parque Hundido

Village Café, on Avenida Porfirio Díaz by Parque Hundido, takes its name from Auvers-sur-Oise, the French village where Vincent van Gogh painted several street scenes, and which the café holds up as the calm it wants to offer.8 It has a second branch in Del Valle, and this one has Wi-Fi and a brunch menu.

The park itself, on the old brickworks site, is the reason to come: take your coffee to the trees, then continue south to Mixcoac’s Plaza Valentín Gómez Farías, ringed by old houses now used as schools.12
