Śródmieście Północne is the business core north of Aleje Jerozolimskie, built up around the Palace of Culture and Science. The 237 m tower went up between 1952 and 1955 as a gift from the Soviet Union to the people of Poland, and its 30th-floor terrace, at 114 m, is one of the city's best-known viewpoints.1

Office towers set the hours here: several espresso bars on Złota and Świętokrzyska open at 07:00, and the coffee chains cluster around Aleja Jana Pawła II and Plac Defilad. The independent cafés gather on Plac Bankowy, Plac Grzybowski and Próżna.

Local tip: Visit Próżna in September, when the Singer's Warsaw festival takes over the street and Plac Grzybowski; Café Próżna is at no. 12.5
