Krakowskie Przedmieście and Nowy Świat form the central stretch of the Royal Route, the road south from the Royal Castle toward the king's residence at Wilanów.1 Nowy Świat runs about 1 km from the Copernicus Monument to Plac Trzech Krzyży. It was almost completely destroyed in the 1944 Uprising and rebuilt under Zygmunt Stępiński in its early-19th-century form, since restoring the Art Nouveau facades was judged too costly.1
Cafés line both streets and the side streets off them: Chmielna, Foksal, Bracka, Warecka and Tamka. In 2025 the city closed the route between Plac Zamkowy and the de Gaulle roundabout to cars every weekend until autumn, with traffic and buses returning at dawn on Mondays.2
Local tip: On weekends the route belongs to pedestrians; take an outdoor table at Cor Specialty Coffee or Croque Madame then, and expect buses to be diverted.2

Café Bristol opened on 22 October 1901, a month before the hotel above it took its first guests, in interiors designed by Otto Wagner Jr.3 The Hotel Bristol came through the war and the Uprising largely intact, standing almost alone among the ruins, and reopened in 1945.3 The café, at Krakowskie Przedmieście 42/44, is open daily 09:00–19:00.
Wedel's oldest chocolate lounge, on Szpitalna, still has a neon sign of a boy on a zebra on its roof.4 Blikle has a cukiernia at Nowy Świat 33, one of the Warsaw addresses that fill with queues on tłusty czwartek.5
Matcha bars have spread along the street. About Mátcha at Nowy Świat 66 stays open until 23:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, Sexy Matcha is on Warecka at no. 8, and Matcha Spot shares Zgoda 3 with Store Macarons. Find Tea is at Nowy Świat 60.
For specialty coffee, Cor Specialty Coffee at Krakowskie Przedmieście 62 has tables inside and out. Cafe Stor at Bracka 18 was meant to be a summer pop-up next to the Smyk department store and stayed; it keeps a pre-war floor mosaic, a mezzanine and a summer garden.6 It opens at 08:30 on weekdays and has Wi-Fi.
Wrzenie Świata, on Gałczyńskiego just off Nowy Świat, is a café with books run by the Instytut Reportażu foundation, stocked with reportage, biographies, letters and photo albums. Its name comes from a series by Ryszard Kapuściński published in 1988 and 1990.7 It is open daily 10:00–22:00 and has Wi-Fi.
Cafe Lorentz has the National Museum's address, Aleje Jerozolimskie 3. The museum building, designed by Tadeusz Tolwiński, was inaugurated on 18 June 1938, and Stanisław Lorentz directed the museum from the mid-1930s until 1982.8 The café has outdoor tables and takes cards.
Sucré at Krakowskie Przedmieście 7 opens daily at 07:30, the earliest start on the route. Cafe Atlantic at Chmielna 33 and Cafe Stor follow at 08:30 on weekdays.
Late, La Note at Tamka 43 serves until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, and Gromada on Plac Powstańców Warszawy is open daily 12:00–23:00.
