Wola grew in the 19th century as Warsaw's factory and workers' district, and the village of Wielka Wola joined the city in 1916.1 Around 8 August 1944 it was the scene of the largest single massacre by German forces in Poland, of 40,000 to 50,000 civilians.1 Since the 1990s, towers of up to 53 storeys have gone up, mainly along Towarowa and Prosta.1

Cafés follow the old industrial sites and the new offices: a cluster in Fabryka Norblina on Żelazna, a row on Kolejowa (Railway Street), and roasters' bars and bakeries around Grzybowska, Łucka and Ogrodowa. Metro line M2 serves the district; its first stretch, opened in March 2015, ran from Rondo Daszyńskiego to Dworzec Wileński.2

Local tip: In Fabryka Norblina, Java Cafe opens at 07:30 from Monday to Saturday but not until 09:00 on Sundays.4
