Orchard Road is named after the plantations it once led to, first gambier and pepper in the 1830s, later nutmeg and fruit.1 Tangs, founded in 1934, was on the road by the 1950s, and traffic went fully one-way in 1977.1 Scotts Shopping Centre, home to Singapore's first food court, came down in June 2007 to make way for Scotts Square.1

Coffee on the road follows the malls, so the floor matters as much as the street, and most cafés here come with a unit number. Four stations serve the road: Orchard, Orchard Boulevard, Somerset and Dhoby Ghaut.1

Local tip: For breakfast on the road, Great Nanyang Heritage Cafe at 111 Somerset opens at 07:30 and Halcyon & Crane at Paragon at 08:30.
