Sentosa was Pulau Blakang Mati until the early 1970s, a fortified island from 1870 onward, with a prisoner-of-war camp at Fort Siloso after the surrender of 15 February 1942; the British handed it to the Singapore Armed Forces in 1967.6 The new name, Malay for peace and tranquility, came with a Singapore Tourist Promotion Board contest, and the Sentosa Development Corporation dates from 1 September 1972.6

On the mainland, the area spreads from the HarbourFront towers and VivoCity through the Housing Board estates of Bukit Merah and on to Pasir Panjang. The coffee is scattered rather than clustered, and the trip usually has a reason: a mall, a museum, a ferry or an old family business.

Local tip: Walk the Sentosa Boardwalk from VivoCity rather than riding across, and pick up beans at Tiong Hoe Specialty Coffee on the way back: the roast takes about 30 minutes, about right for a look around the mall.
