Robertson Quay, 51 hectares and the largest and most upstream of the Singapore River's three quays, is named after the municipal counsellor Dr J Murray Robertson.1 The mud flats here were reclaimed in the mid-19th century, and warehouses and boatyards followed in the 1880s.1
A S$170 million river clean-up began in the 1970s and sent the lighter (barge) trade to Pasir Panjang; in the 1990s planners rezoned the quay for homes, hotels and shops.1 The coffee sits a street or two back from the water, on Martin Road, in the UE Square mall on Clemenceau Avenue and at New Bahru on Kim Yam Road, with kopi further out at Indus Road.
Local tip: Pair a morning walk along the river with Dutch Colony Coffee or GREYBOX COFFEE at UE Square, both open from 08:00.

Martin Road and Oxley Rise
Common Man Coffee Roasters, at 22 Martin Road, began as a partnership between Harry Grover of 40 Hands, the Australian roaster Five Senses Coffee and the Spa Esprit Group.2 It is the exclusive Southeast Asian distributor for Five Senses, and it imports and roasts beans itself: filter roasts on Martin Road, bulk espresso roasts at a roastery in Senoko.2 The Book Cafe is next door at No. 20, in the Seng Kee Building.
Uphill toward Orchard, Lilac Oak at 71 Oxley Rise is a vegan café whose bake boxes, tarts and whole cakes share a menu with sandwiches, gelato and oat lattes.6 It closes on Wednesdays and at 16:00 from Monday to Thursday, and Fort Canning, Dhoby Ghaut and Somerset stations are each about 10 minutes on foot.6
The quay itself is condominiums, Kim Seng Park and a strip of restaurants, cafés and bars popular with joggers and families.1 At its upstream end, Awfully Chocolate +Cafe and Kofx share 1 Kim Seng Promenade.
UE Square: three counters in one mall
GREYBOX COFFEE, a Shanghai specialty chain founded in 2016 with 23 stores in China at the time, chose UE Square for its first shop abroad in 2024, five years after it announced overseas plans.3 It opens 08:00–18:00 every day.
Dutch Colony Coffee has a unit in the same mall, with the same 08:00–18:00 day, and roasts at its own Defu Lane roastery and academy.4 Lean & Rich completes the trio, with bakes and outdoor seats, from Tuesday to Sunday. The Defu Lane roastery itself takes visitors by appointment only, on weekdays.4
New Bahru and Kim Yam Road
PPP Coffee, once called Papa Palheta, uses micro-production methods to monitor its roasts closely and has a shop at New Bahru, the Lo & Behold Group's complex in the River Valley.25 It also runs the C-Platform, a space for coffee enthusiasts to socialize and learn.2 The shop stays open until 22:00 daily, which is late for this stretch.
ÁTIPICO, in the same complex's School Block, is the midtown outpost of an Italian bistro, more a place for a meal than a quick cup.5 For kopi, Thong Aik Coffee is at 78 Indus Road, and Grace Espresso is on River Valley Road.
