Three canals meet in the triangular basin at Little Venice, built so long boats could turn: the Grand Union's Paddington Arm, the Regent's Canal and the Paddington Basin arm.1 The name is often credited to Robert Browning, who lived nearby from 1862 to 1887, though Lord Kinross argued in 1966 that Lord Byron made the comparison first.1

South of the station, Queensway is Bayswater's shopping street of restaurants, pubs and souvenir shops, with Whiteleys near its northern end on the site of the department store William Whiteley opened in 1867.2 Queen Victoria gave that store a Royal Warrant in 1896.2 The street's cafés keep the longest hours in the area, with Dr Power running from 06:00 until 01:00 every day. On Praed Street, closer to the station, Mihbaj opens 07:00–22:00.

Local tip: Check the day before heading to the Magazine Building: Friends of Ours closes on Monday, and its kitchen shuts an hour before the doors.6

Kioskafé on Norfolk Place

Kioskafé opened at the end of September 2015 as Monocle's follow-up to its Marylebone and Tokyo cafés, at 31 Norfolk Place, opposite St Mary's Hospital and around the corner from the station.3 The idea is a cross between a newsagent and a café: magazines and papers share the room with an espresso machine, and customers could pick a title from a list for a print-on-demand newspaper service.3

Allpress's Redchurch blend was on espresso at that first review, and the reviewer wondered whether the paper service was the only one of its kind in London.3 Doors open at 07:00 every day.

Little Venice and Warwick Avenue

North of the canal, The Café at Clifton Nurseries sits inside the garden center's grounds, in a glasshouse with a terrace.4 It serves brunch and lunch from local ingredients, morning bakes and cakes, specialist teas, and wine, beer and cocktails.4 It closes at 17:30 on weekdays and 16:30 on Sunday.

A short walk away, the Cabmen's Shelter on Warwick Avenue stands in the center of the road, beside the Underground station.5 It is one of 13 left of the 61 put up across London between 1875 and 1914.5

Kensington Gardens and the Serpentine

Inside the park, the setting changes completely. Friends of Ours occupies Zaha Hadid's Magazine Building beside the Serpentine North Gallery, serving brunch, lunch and sharing plates with speciality coffee, organic wines and cocktails.6 It closes on Monday, opens at 10:00 on other days, shuts at 18:00 on weekdays and 19:00 at weekends, and welcomes dogs and large groups.6

The Broadwalk, next to the Diana Memorial Playground in Kensington Gardens, is the family option, close to the Elfin Oak and the Time Flies clocktower.7 Colicci runs it, with coffee roasted locally from single-origin beans, handmade cakes, stone-baked pizza, a children's range and British scoop ice cream.7 It opens at 09:00 year-round, closes 30 minutes before the park, and takes cards only.7 It shuts on Christmas Day and at 15:00 on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.7
