Maida Vale takes its name from The Hero of Maida, a pub on Edgware Road marking the British victory at Maida in 1806, and building began along that road in the 1820s.1 St John's Wood is older in name, from a wood in a manor that passed to the Knights of St John after 1312; Lord's cricket ground and the Abbey Road studios are its landmarks.2

Maida Vale's own landmark is the BBC's Delaware Road building, whose seven studios housed the Peel Sessions and the Radiophonic Workshop.1 Hours split the area in two. The residential streets close early, and Dawn Seal stops at 16:00. Kilburn and Queen's Park run later, with Bob's Cafe open until 23:00 from Monday to Saturday.

Local tip: Go to Lanka for takeaway rather than a sit-down: the space is small, and The Infatuation's 2025 review found many customers collecting orders.5

Lanka on Goldhurst Terrace

Goldhurst Terrace is the street to come to in South Hampstead for something sweet. Lanka's chef, Masayuki Hara, previously worked at Le Gavroche, and Time Out described its output in 2020 as French- and Japanese-styled patisserie of the highest order.34 The Infatuation's 2025 review singled out the green tea tart, the green tea tiramisu and the baked cheesecake.5

It is a small space, and many orders are picked up rather than eaten in, so treat it as a grab-and-go stop or order ahead.5 Time Out's review also notes filter coffee from Monmouth and loose-leaf teas alongside the cakes.4 Its green-tea roll cake was on the opening menu at the Monocle Café in Marylebone in 2013.3

Wired Co. on Broadhurst Gardens

West Hampstead's coffee has a long-standing address in Wired Co., established in 2012 at 194 Broadhurst Gardens, beside a men's hairdresser.6 It serves locally roasted specialty coffee, with single-origin beans from Climpson & Sons on its menu, plus breakfast, lunch and smoothies.6

Its evenings set it apart from the daytime cafés around it: wine nights run on Friday and Saturday, with small bites from 17:30.6

West End Lane and West Hampstead Square

Art 4 Fun, at 172 West End Lane, has run since 1997 as a ceramic painting café: you choose from more than 500 blank pieces, decorate one with non-toxic water-based paints and leave it to be glazed and fired.7 As of 2026, the site lists a £6 studio fee per person and ceramics from £18.50.7

The studio also takes baby prints on plates, mugs or bowls from £26, and clay hand or footprint impressions from £95, by appointment.7 It opens at 10:00 and closes at 18:00 or 22:00, depending on the day, and only service dogs may come in.7

Intermission, a minute's walk from the Tube, sits just outside West Hampstead Overground station and calls itself a coffeeshop in business to change the rhythm of the world, with people and planet first and a stated aim of leading on sustainable coffee.8 Its 07:00 weekday start suits the commute, and it closes at 16:00.8
