Harvard Square is a triangular plaza where Massachusetts Avenue, Brattle Street and John F. Kennedy Street meet, with the walls of Harvard Yard on its eastern side; it lies in Cambridge, a city of its own across the river from Boston.1 Heavy foot traffic makes it and nearby Brattle Square a stage for street musicians.1
Massachusetts Avenue runs north from here past Porter Square, which straddles the Cambridge–Somerville line between Harvard and Davis Squares, and on into North Cambridge.2 Cafés line the avenue the whole way, and this stretch has more cafés open into the evening than any other part of Cambridge.
Local tip: Want a coffee after 22:00 near Harvard? Zinneken’s on Massachusetts Avenue serves until 23:00 Monday to Saturday, and Tilde in North Cambridge stays open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.

Page & Leaf Cafe is at 1815 Massachusetts Avenue, the building that was a Sears, Roebuck store from 1928 to 1985 and is now Lesley University’s University Hall.2 CSCA Cafe opened at 1995 Massachusetts Avenue in February 2025 as an offshoot of the Cambridge School of Culinary Arts across the street, with pastries, coffee, tea and hot chocolate and some indoor seating; much of Lesley University’s campus is in the same blocks.42
Further north toward Davis Square, Tilde at 2376 Massachusetts Avenue is a café by day and a wine bar at night, with Middle Eastern brunch dishes until 15:00 and cheese and charcuterie from Formaggio Kitchen in the evening.5 It closes at midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, and its brunch is a pop-up with Third Time, which ran an ice cream shop in Somerville’s Bow Market.5
