The Back Bay is reclaimed land. Filling of the tidal flats began in 1857, building in 1859, and by 1882 the ground was in place, laid out with five east–west streets crossed by north–south streets named alphabetically from Arlington to Hereford.1 Its rows of Victorian brownstones are among the best-preserved examples of 19th-century urban design in the country.1

Newbury Street holds most of the cafés. The first shops opened in its brownstones around 1905, and today the mile-long eastern stretch has hundreds of shops and restaurants, with the dearest boutiques near the Public Garden and looser ones toward Massachusetts Avenue.2

Local tip: For a late coffee in the Back Bay, Trident Booksellers & Cafe on Newbury Street serves until midnight every day, and Thinking Cup at 85 Newbury stays open until 21:00 on Saturdays and Sundays.

Newbury Street from Arlington to Mass. Ave.

At the Public Garden end, Thinking Cup at 85 Newbury opens at 07:00 every day and stays open until 21:00 at weekends; a barista there told The Boston Globe in 2025 that some drinks reached US$8 after three price rises that year.3 Revival Cafe + Kitchen at 103 Newbury serves brunch with outdoor seating.

Café Susu sits inside the Suitsupply menswear store at 240A Newbury and opens 10:00–20:00, Monday to Saturday. At the Massachusetts Avenue end, George Howell Coffee opened in August 2025 at 400 Newbury, in Lyrik Back Bay, an open-air plaza built over the Mass Pike.4

Trident Booksellers and L.A. Burdick

Trident Booksellers & Cafe at 338 Newbury has been a bookstore with a kitchen since 1984; for its 40th year in 2024 it took over the whole upper floor of its building, adding shelves and The Stacks, an event room behind a door disguised as a bookcase.5 It opens daily 08:00–00:00.

L.A. Burdick, the chocolatier Larry Burdick started in New York in 1987 and later moved to Walpole, New Hampshire, opened its Newbury Street shop in 2012.6 The café, at 220 Clarendon Street on the Newbury corner, serves hot chocolate in dark, milk and white versions.6

Early coffee off Newbury Street

Away from the shopping streets the hours start earlier. Manhattan Bagel and Coffee at 147 Massachusetts Avenue opens daily at 05:00, and Berkeley Perk Cafe at 69 Berkeley Street opens at 06:30, Monday to Saturday. Newsfeed Cafe at 700 Boylston Street, on Copley Square, has Wi-Fi and air conditioning.

Prices here run high even by Boston standards: a Boston Globe analysis of Datasembly data found coffee prices in the city up more than 36% between January and late 2025, with brewers blaming drought in Brazil and tariffs.3 Tatte’s café at 399 Boylston Street opens at 07:00 on weekdays and closes at 20:00, and Pavement at 286 Newbury opens daily 07:00–18:00.
