Somerville, rather than downtown Boston, is where cafés with Wi-Fi gather: around Davis Square, along Highland Avenue and out toward Union Square. Cambridge comes next, with a run of them on Cambridge Street in Inman Square and around Central Square. Jamaica Plain has the highest share of any neighborhood, close to a third of its cafés, while the Financial District and Chinatown, for all their office towers, have only a few.
Boston also runs its own network, Wicked Free Wi-Fi, owned and operated by the city’s Department of Innovation and Technology.1 It is built as an outdoor service and is not designed to work inside buildings, so it helps on a bench in a square more than at a café table.1 The city is extending it to Nubian, Mattapan, Egleston and Maverick Squares and to its 20 neighborhood Main Street districts.1
Local tip: Diesel Cafe and Forge Baking Company share owners and both open 07:00–19:00 daily, so if every table at Diesel is taken, try Forge on Somerville Avenue.3

Diesel Cafe at 257 Elm Street has been in Davis Square since 1999 and is known for its vintage film photo booth and pool tables.2 A pandemic-era remodel swapped the grungy industrial look for a more open, loft-like room and moved the pool table to the back.3 It opens 07:00–19:00 every day, as does Forge Baking Company at 626 Somerville Avenue, a sister business of Diesel.3
Revival Cafe + Kitchen is farther down Elm Street at number 197, open 07:30–15:00 daily. On Highland Avenue, 3 Little Figs at number 278 serves 08:00–14:00, and the Armory Cafe at number 191 opens at noon on weekdays but stays until 19:30 from Tuesday to Saturday. Pound House at 703 Broadway and Zaruma Gold on Woodbine Street both open at 08:00.
1369 Coffee House has served Cambridge since 1993 from two shops, one in Inman Square and one in Central Square.4 The Inman shop, at 1369 Cambridge Street, opens 07:00–15:00 on weekdays and 08:00–16:00 at weekends. Farther along Cambridge Street at number 1271, bōm dough keeps almost the same hours from 07:30.
Andala Coffee House at 286 Franklin Street has served Middle Eastern food and drinks since 2006.5 Near the river, Circus Cooperative Cafe at 31 Putnam Avenue has been worker-owned and run since 2023, with coffee from Equal Exchange and pastries from the Danish Pastry House; it opens 08:00–15:00 daily.6
Trident Booksellers & Cafe has been part of Boston’s reading life since 1984, and it now fills a second floor that includes a private event room behind a door disguised as bookshelves.7 The café serves from 08:00 until midnight every day. Revival has a second branch at 103 Newbury Street, and Newsfeed Cafe at 700 Boylston Street opens 09:00–17:00 from Monday to Saturday.
Downtown, Sip Café on Post Office Square opens at 06:30 on weekdays and closes at 20:00, or 21:00 on Thursdays and Fridays. On Massachusetts Avenue, Farmer Horse Coffee stays open until 20:00 from Monday to Saturday.
Ula Cafe at 284 Amory Street opens 08:00–14:00 every day, and Fiore’s Bakery at 55 South Street bakes and serves from 08:00 on weekdays. Jadu at 767 Centre Street opened as a neighborhood coffee shop in December 2024 and added evening wine service in June 2025.8 Brassica Kitchen + Cafe is at 3710 Washington Street, near Forest Hills.
In Allston, Coffee Turco at 483 Cambridge Street serves 09:00–18:00 daily. In Roxbury, Dudley Cafe is at 15 Warren Street, and in Dorchester, Homestead bakery & cafe at 1448 Dorchester Avenue combines a bakery counter with indoor and outdoor seats.
