The South End claims the largest intact Victorian row-house district in the United States, more than 300 acres built on filled tidal marsh; construction began in 1849, and the district joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.1 Eleven residential parks, laid out like English squares, break up the brick terraces; Union Park, Worcester Square and Franklin and Blackstone Squares are among them.1

Tremont Street, Columbus Avenue and Washington Street are the main business streets, and the cafés follow them.1 Expect bakery cafés more than espresso bars: Colette Bakery on Columbus Avenue, the South End Buttery on Shawmut Avenue and Sip of Joy on Tremont Street.

Local tip: On a Sunday between May and mid-November, combine the SoWa Open Market on Harrison Avenue with coffee at Mohr & McPherson or Mod Espresso on the same block.3

Getting to the South End

The Orange Line runs along the partly covered Southwest Corridor at the neighborhood’s western edge, with stations at Back Bay, Massachusetts Avenue and Ruggles.1 Silver Line buses SL4 and SL5 run along Washington Street through the middle, on the route of the old Washington Street Elevated, which was replaced in the 1980s.1 On the Back Bay side, the Green Line stops at Copley, Prudential and Symphony.1

Bakery cafés on Columbus and Shawmut avenues

Colette Bakery took over the Columbus Avenue space at No. 517 that Cafe Madeleine had left in late 2022, and opened there that December, after its first bakeries in Medford and Melrose north of Boston.2 It has a few outdoor tables.

The South End Buttery has two addresses. The original at 314 Shawmut Avenue opens daily from 06:30 to 20:00, with outdoor seating, and the second, at 37 Clarendon Street, opens 07:00–15:00. Sip of Joy Cafe and Bakery is at 661 Tremont Street, and Greystone Cafe on Appleton Street opens daily 07:00–16:00.

SoWa and Harrison Avenue

SoWa, short for South of Washington, is the old industrial strip between Washington Street and Albany Street.1 In 2026 the SoWa Open Market runs every Sunday from May 3 to November 15, 11:00–17:00, with farmers, artists, food trucks and live music on pedestrian-only Thayer Street and at 500 Harrison Avenue.3

Mohr & McPherson is at that same address, 500 Harrison Avenue, and Mod Espresso is across the street at No. 485, so a market Sunday can start with coffee on the block. The market sets up next to the galleries, studios and shops in SoWa’s old factory buildings, so the block stays busy after the stalls pack up.3

Massachusetts Avenue and the jazz blocks

Until the 1950s the South End and Roxbury were Boston’s jazz district; around 1930 the Black musicians’ union, Local 535, moved its office to 409 Massachusetts Avenue, and Wally’s Paradise is the only club of that era still open.1 Farmer Horse Coffee, at 374 Massachusetts Avenue, opens until 20:00 Monday to Saturday and has Wi-Fi, air conditioning and outdoor seating.

For the earliest cup, Cuppacoffee on Traveler Street opens daily at 06:00 and closes at 13:30. Tatte has a café at 345 Harrison Avenue, a few blocks from the SoWa market.
