Around Boston the first coffee of the day has long meant Dunkin’, which Bill Rosenberg opened in Quincy, just south of the city, as the Open Kettle in 1948 and renamed Dunkin’ Donuts in 1950.1 The region also has its own shorthand: a “coffee regular” comes with cream and sugar, two of each in a small, three in a medium and four in a large.2
Independent early openers follow the same clock. Dorchester has the most of them, on Dorchester Avenue and in Savin Hill, followed by the Financial District, where the earliest counters run on weekdays only. Six o’clock is the usual start, with one bagel shop on Massachusetts Avenue an hour ahead.
Local tip: Boston News Cafe’s two downtown counters close at weekends; on a Saturday at 06:00, head to Cuppacoffee in the South End or PS Gourmet in South Boston instead.
Where these cafés are: Roxbury & Dorchester (3), Downtown & Chinatown (2), Somerville: Union & Davis Squares (1), South End (1), Back Bay (1), South Boston (1).

Say “regular” and mean it: across Massachusetts, and into Connecticut and Rhode Island along I-95, counter staff read it as cream and sugar without asking.2 Past the New York State line the shorthand breaks down, and visitors who expect black coffee, or who think regular simply means not decaf, are the usual source of mix-ups.2 Dunkin’ itself does not train staff to a single definition, so if you want it black, say black.2
McKenna’s Cafe at 107–109 Savin Hill Avenue opens at 06:00 every day and closes at 16:00, or 15:00 on Sundays. The breakfast menu runs from pancakes, waffles and omelettes to Irish bacon, corned beef hash and granola-crusted French toast.3
The Sugar Bowl at 857 Dorchester Avenue opens at 06:00 on weekdays, 08:00 on Saturdays and 09:00 on Sundays. Farther along the avenue at number 1480, AKOKO - Coco Leaf flips that pattern: it opens at 08:00 from Monday to Thursday but at 06:00 from Friday to Sunday.
Boston News Cafe runs two weekday counters in the Financial District, at 28 State Street and 260 Franklin Street. Both open at 06:00 and close at 16:00 from Monday to Friday, and both stay shut at weekends, so a Saturday dawn coffee downtown needs another plan. With a 16:00 close, they suit a coffee before work more than a slow, late breakfast.
Manhattan Bagel and Coffee at 147 Massachusetts Avenue opens at 05:00 every day, an hour ahead of most early cafés in the city, and serves bagels, pressed sandwiches, desserts and ice cream until 17:00.4
In the South End, Cuppacoffee at 57 Traveler Street opens at 06:00 daily but closes at 13:30, so it suits a morning stop rather than an afternoon one.
PS Gourmet at 106 Dorchester Street in South Boston was established in 1986 by James E. Fallon and makes breakfast sandwiches to order, along with pastries and muffins.5 It opens at 06:00 every day of the week, Sundays included, and stays open into the evening.
North of the river, Brianna’s Café at 389 Medford Street in Somerville opens 06:00–15:00 daily, takes cards and has vegan options.

In Boston and across New England, a coffee regular means coffee with cream and sugar. The usual measure is two creams and two sugars in a small, three of each in a medium and four in a large. The shorthand starts to confuse staff once you cross into New York State.
