Bakery cafés in Los Angeles follow the city's neighborhoods: egg tarts and pork buns in Chinatown, kosher pastry on Pico Boulevard, French bread Downtown, Portuguese tarts in Santa Monica and donut counters along Vermont Avenue. Downtown & Arts District has the most, about a quarter of them, ahead of Koreatown.
The oldest roots are in Little Tokyo. Fugetsu-do, a wagashi (Japanese sweets) shop founded in 1903, appears to be the city's oldest food business still operating, and is known for mochi and manjū.1
Local tip: Paderia in Santa Monica closes when the day's baking sells out, so go in the morning; Wonder Bakery in Chinatown is the later option, open to 21:00 on Friday and Saturday.
