Echo Park and Silver Lake sit between Downtown and Hollywood, and Sunset Boulevard ties them together. The boulevard starts at Figueroa Street downtown and runs about 23.6 miles to the Pacific Coast Highway; Metro Local line 2 covers its eastern end, and line 4 runs from Sunset Junction to Downtown.1 Echo Park's main commercial streets are Sunset and Glendale boulevards.2

Both neighborhoods began as early film country. William Selig set up what may have been the city's first permanent film studio in Edendale in 1909, Mack Sennett followed in 1912, and Walt Disney's first studio stood at Griffith Park Boulevard and Hyperion Avenue, where Gelson's Market is now.3 Today the cafés line West Sunset, with a second cluster up Echo Park Avenue.

Local tip: Starting early? Stereoscope and Woodcat, facing each other on the 1500 block of West Sunset, both open at 06:00 on weekdays; Canyon Coffee and Valerie on Echo Park Avenue follow at 07:00.
