Harvey Wilcox bought 120 acres here in February 1887, and his wife Daeida chose the name because it sounded nice and holly brought luck. Hollywood incorporated in 1903 and merged with Los Angeles in 1910, largely to get the city's water and sewers.1 The neighborhood runs from Hollywood Boulevard and Franklin Avenue south to Melrose, between La Brea and Western avenues.1

The Metro B Line reached Hollywood in June 1999, with stations under Hollywood Boulevard at Western, Vine and Highland.1 Cafés cluster near those stations, then spread south along Sunset and Santa Monica boulevards.

Local tip: Heading up to see the Hollywood Sign? Beachwood Cafe on Beachwood Drive opens at 08:00 and serves until 21:00 from Friday to Sunday.

Compelling Coffee on Las Palmas Avenue

Kian Abedini had been roasting under the Compelling Coffee name for about seven years when he built his first café in 2019, a room of roughly 300 square feet in the Line Lofts building at 1737 North Las Palmas Avenue. It has seats inside and on a patio, a takeout window and pastries from Farmshop.2

Abedini's stated aim was to find exceptional coffees and make them accessible.2 A few blocks east, Groundwork has a café at 1501 North Cahuenga Boulevard.

Sunset and Santa Monica boulevards

Hollywood's film business started south of the boulevard: the Nestor Film Company set up at 6121 Sunset in October 1911, often cited as the first studio here, though another account dates the first one to 1913 on Formosa Avenue.1 A few doors away, Louis Coffee Bar at 6115 West Sunset opens daily 07:00–19:00.

Farther west on Sunset, Javista at No. 6275 serves daily 07:00–17:00, Philz is at No. 6430 and Menotti's Coffee Stop at No. 6515. On Santa Monica Boulevard, Stereoscope has a café at No. 6677 and Liberation Coffee House is at No. 6725. On Selma Avenue, near the Vine station, Caffe Hub is at No. 6371 and Duidough Cafe & Cookie Lab at No. 6334, and Black Canvas Coffee is at 1411 North Highland Avenue.

Franklin Avenue and Beachwood Canyon

The Hollywood Sign went up in 1923 reading HOLLYWOODLAND, an advertisement for a housing development; in 1949 the Chamber of Commerce rebuilt it without LAND.1 That development is the upper part of Beachwood Canyon, which still has its own market, café and stables.3

Beachwood Cafe at 2695 Beachwood Drive opens at 08:00 every day and stays open until 21:00 from Friday to Sunday. Down on Franklin Avenue, Solar de Cahuenga at No. 6440 serves daily 08:00–16:00, and Jane Q is at 1800 Argyle Avenue, near the Vine station.
